State Champs crowned tomorrow afternoon
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 September, 2012 : - - The 2012 Queensland State Junior Surfing Titles kicked off today on the Gold Coast, with the state's best U/18, U/16 and U/14 male and female surfers beginning their campaign for a prestigious state junior surfing crown. A building South-Easterly swell saw consistent waves pour in at Duranbah Beach, with competitors in all six age division hitting the water for the opening rounds of competition.
The 2012 Queensland State Junior Surfing Titles will resume tomorrow morning, before concluding in the afternoon where this year’s champions will be crowned. The Queensland State Junior Surfing Titles is the exclusive qualification pathway for the state's elite junior competitors aiming for selection in Queensland's State Junior Surfing Team, set to compete at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles in Tasmania later this year.
The event is a key stepping stone in Surfing Queensland's development pathway, with the likes of Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Bede Durbidge just a few of the high profile athletes who have previously competed in this event. In 2012, Surfing Queensland will embark on a significant change in the selection process of the Queensland Junior Surfing Team. In contrast to previous years, the Queensland Junior Surfing Team will now be selected through a combination of the Queensland State Junior Titles and newly formed Queensland State Junior Selection Camp.
The 2012 Queensland State Junior Titles will be activated over a three-day period (September 24-26), followed by the Queensland State Junior Selection Camp (September 27-28).
The three-day, 2012 Queensland State Junior Titles will also see the introduction of two new divisions (U/14 Boys and U/14 Girls), which is designed to provide younger Queensland athletes with an introduction and positive experience in competitive junior surfing.
Queensland State Junior Selection Camp
Athletes will be chosen to attend the 2012 Queensland State Junior Selection Camp based on their performance at the Queensland State Junior Titles. These athletes will also be joined by wildcard competitors chosen by the Surfing Queensland Selection Committee.
