Young competitors show courage as swell increases during BL's Blast Off

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 September, 2012 : - - The swell increased dramatically for the 340-plus competitors during the second day of the 2012 BL’s Blast Off Presented by Hurley at Whale Beach. The surfers aged 14-and-under had little trouble tackling the punchy overhead waves that rolled through the contest area all day. 1988 World Champion surfer and Contest Director Barton Lynch said: “It’s absolutely incredible to see some of the waves these young surfers are taking off on. Some of the kids are surfing on waves that are double and triple overhead. The courage they’ve shown is just amazing.”

Standing ovations were a common site on the beach during the under-6’s and 8’s division with spectators being wowed by the bravery of the young competitors. Under-12s surfer Kyuss King (Byron Bay), showed both style and flair in his second round heat, throwing down a lethal mixture of backside snaps and floaters. Judges stated: “Technique looks great. His backhand and his style is looking really good.”

Harley Ross Webster (Curl Curl), performed one of the standout maneuvers of the morning, throwing down a powerful backside snap that allowed him to win his round-two heat in the under-14s. Darcy Crump (Avalon) was another early standout with a stylish display of power-based surfing. Judges said: “Amazing display of rail surfing.”

In the under-14 girls, both Holly Wawn (Newport) and Billie Melinz (Coalcliff) were victorious in their round-two heats. Both girls attacked the waves with their powerful repertoires and trademark rail surfing. The event, now in its seventh year, has an implemented coaching element where all competitors are given constructive feedback by the judges to improve their surfing.

The four day event runs across five divisions for boys and girls: under-14's, 12's 10's, 8's and 6's with parental assistance being permitted in the 8's and 6's.
