6 - 7 October 2012

Corona Extra has once again partnered with Puerto Rico Tourism Company

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 September, 2012 : - - Event number two of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit is fast approaching next week. The $ 37,000 event will be held October 6th and 7th, 2012 at Middles Beach, Isabela on the northwest corner of the island. The Corona Contest will be the second of three events which will decide the Men’s and Women’s Champions of the APSPR (Asociacion de Profesional Surfing de Puerto Rico) annual championship for the 2012 – 2013 season. The total Men's prize purse next week will be $25,000, while the Women competitors will share a total purse of $12,000.

Werner Vega, President of APSPR announced that Corona Extra has once again  partnered with Puerto Rico Tourism Company and several other sponsors to continue the premier pro surf circuit of the Caribbean.  “Since 2001, Corona Extra has been the biggest supporter of Puerto Rican pro surfers” said Mr. Vega. The continued support of Corona Extra shows a huge commitment to the sport and it’s athletes. The $37,000 total purse means that we will be able to pay the winner of the Men a first prize of $10,000. The Women’s champion will receive $5,000.

A field of 80 or more contestants is expected that will include competitors from the Mainland East Coast, California and Hawaii. The Middles contest is the second of the year for the APSPR competition season. Currently leading the Mens rankings for 2012 is Franscisco Bellorin, 22, of Venezuela, who won the first event at Domes in February. Bellorin is followed by Puerto Rico’s own favorite son, Brian Toth, 27, of Isabela, who is a three-time champion of the APSPR Circuit. Toth is the most successful Puerto Rican surfer ever, having competed for several years on the international ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Tour, where he is currently ranked number 33.

The points race for the champions of the Corona Extra Circuit will be decided after the third event of the 2012 – 2013 season, which will take place next February or March at Domes in Rincon. Last year’s event at Middles was won by Hawaiian Kekoa Bacalso, in a close final with his Floridian opponent Gabe Kling. Amy Nicholl, from New Smyrna Beach, Florida won two APSPR Women’s events in 2011, with victories at both Middles and Domes.

In the points race for the Mens Title, Bellorin holds a slim lead of 245 points over Toth, with former Middles Finalist Alejandro Moreda in equal third. Also in equal third is veteran Mainland campaigner, Asher Nolan, of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Another Florida pro, Blake Jones sits in equal fifth place, while the rest of the current top ten are all Puerto Rican surfers, including past APSPR Champion Juan Ashton.

On the Women’s side of the draw, the current ratings leader is Quincy Davis, 16, of Montauk, New York, who won the Domes event in March in a close heat over Maria Kuzmovich, of Daytona Beach, Florida. Both Davis and Kuzmovich are expected to compete again at Middles, as they chase the 2012 APSPR Women’s title. The highest ranking local Puerto Rican woman is Liza Caban, 18, of Aguadilla.

In 2011 Amy Nicholl’s dominance in the APSPR Women’s Title race left local surfers Cabán, Liselie Gonzales, Maria Del Mar Gonzalez and Idalis Alvarado struggling to catch her. All those talented local girls are expected to compete next week at Middles, where they will be attempting to give Nicholl, Davis and Kuzmovich a taste of “local knowledge”. For surfing fans who attend the Middles event, there will be gala nighttime entertainment both Friday and Saturday night at many festive venues in the Isabela area.

“Surfing fans who are unable to attend in person at Middles will once again have the opportunity to follow the action online with the popular “Heats on Demand” feature”, said APSPR Event Coordinator, Viviannee Vega. At the completion of each day of competition they will have access to every scoring ride of the event. On our website you can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to view and much more. Each scoring ride is shown, along with the points earned for that wave, through the technology of the Beach Byte computer scoring system. Each of the five judges enters their scores for each surfer’s rides into the computer, which tallies the points and decides the winners. All of that scoring information is then available on the APSPR website to anyone with access to a modem.

Corona Extra, and APSPR invite all the fans on the island to enjoy the best of surfing action coming soon to Middles Beach! The generous sponsors of the Corona Extra Pro Circuit are: Corona Extra, Corona Light, Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Wapa TV, APSPR, Hang Loose Surf Shop, Werner Vega Surfboards, Alfa Rock, n-punto, Jose Cuervo, El Nuevo Día, and Rad TV.
