Groms Head Into Finals Day In Cronulla For The Rip Curl GromSearch
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 October, 2012 : - - The Rip Curl GromSearch returned to Wanda on Cronulla’s northern stretch to complete the all-important round two of the boys 14 and 16’s divisions and decide who will move into tomorrow’s finals. The 14’s boys started things early with solid surfing from Darcy Crump (Avalon) and Kai Warner (Narrabeen), but the clear standout of the division was Harley Ross-Webster (Nth Curl Curl) with a 16.73, two-wave tally identifying him as a major threat for the title.
The 16’s boys then hit the water on a building swell and immediately showed their class with Sunshine Coaster and top seed Kai Hing (Wurtulla) amassing a 16.24 to take the win and secure his spot in the finals. Jeames Young (Yamba) then joined him with a solid win and as the waves improved, the surfing hit a new level.
The heat of the day unfolded between Kalani Ball (Stanwell Park, NSW) and Harry Bryant (Noosa, Qld) with both surfers needing the win after placing second in their round one heats. Harry nailed an early 7.33 and then got a long left to post an event high 9.60, only to watch Kalani fire off an 8.00 followed by a 9.43 to take the lead, lock in the highest combined total of the event (17.70) and ensure progression into the finals. Despite a heat total of 16.93 that would have won him any other heat in the contest, Bryant had to accept second position and has a nervous wait to see if that will allow him enough points to progress.
Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW) then reminded the rest of the field that he has his eyes set on the title with a commanding win including an explosive 9.00 ride and Monty Tait (Maroubra) continued his recent good form with another win. The 16’s girls saw Holly Wawn (Newport) and Billie Melinz (Coalcliff) stand above the field with polished performances ensuring them of the chance to go for the title tomorrow.
The FIVE:AM expressions session put 20 groms into a barreling left-hand suck bank, with Zack Wrightman (Skennars Head) and Harry Girdler (Avalon) standing out above the star studded field to take the prizes. The Rip Curl GromSearch series is presented by Telstra, with FIVE:AM Organic Yoghurt. Event partners Penny Skateboards, Polaroid cameras and DHD surfboards provide support and ASL magazine is the online media partner.
