Rip Curl GromSearch underway in pristine conditions at Jan Juc, Victoria
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 October, 2012 : - - The first day of the Rip Curl GromSearch in Victoria saw perfect summer like conditions on offer for over 100 of Australia’s best 16 and under surfers as they swarmed the beach for day 1 of the three-day Victorian event. The premier 16 & under division was first in the water and utilised the best of the clean conditions to get things moving with solid scores and progressive surfing.
Luke Hynd (Burleigh Heads, Qld) led the charge with a massive aerial netting him a 9.33 and contributing to the day’s highest heat total. Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW), Darcy Crump (Avalon, NSW) and Harry Bryant (Noosa, Qld) were the only other nine-point rides of the day, with Bryant nailing the top score with a 9.60 out of 10. His efforts earned the Telstra Wave of the Day but he was left in second place behind Jackson Coffey (Crescent Heads, NSW) as he searched for a second score that never came.
The girls 16 & under division saw the closest heat of the day with local girl Zoe Clarke (Jan Juc, Vic) battling all heat only to end up tied on a combined two wave heat total of 12.30 with Laura Poncini (Sunshine Coast, Qld). The judges had to go to a count-back with Zoe awarded the win with a superior back-up wave.
Other notable performers were Lucy Callister (Sunshine Coast, Qld) and Ellie Francis (Middleton, South Australia). The temperature increased along with the beach crowd and surfers to stand out in the latter part of the day included Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island, Vic), Riley Laing (The Entrance, NSW) and Paris Whitaker (Cronulla, NSW). The winner of the popular five:am Expression Session was Walter Hiatt (Phillip Island, Vic) and Isabella Nichols (Coolum, NSW) for their progressive surfing.
The Rip Curl GromSearch series is presented by Telstra, with five:am Organic Yoghurt. Event partners Penny Skateboards, Polaroid cameras and DHD surfboards provide support and ASL magazine is the online media partner.
