Zon North Canyon Show at Praia do Norte

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 October, 2012 : - - Garrett McNamara has arrived to Portugal for another exploration mission to the waves of Nazaré, during the months of October and November, as part of the ZON NORTH CANYON SHOW 2012. The Extreme Waterman is back to Praia do Norte, where he made history by surfing the biggest wave ever, a deed that led him to win the award for the Biggest Wave in the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards and to enter the Guinness Book.

“This will be another great year for Nazaré. The first year’s focus was to study and explore, the second I really got my feet wet, and this year I see endless possibilities. If what we know holds true, Nazaré will show us why it’s becoming so popular as a big wave destination, and deliver me the ride of a lifetime. The last 2 years of training in Nazaré has given me a unique perspective and readied me for such a moment”, said Garrett McNamara.

According to Pedro Faraústo, Product Director of ZON, “ZON is a company that is always focused on innovation. Often innovation involves risk. This project fits perfectly in this vision. In 2010, when we started the ZON NORTH CANYON, nobody would bet that the biggest wave ever would be surfed in Portugal. This year there is a big surprise to be revealed soon and whoever wants to see the surf sessions live can do so, from today, on the ZON NORTH CANYON Facebook page”.

To the administrator of Nazaré Qualifica, Miguel Sousinha, “a year after the record, the expectations are increasing”. “We believe that today this project and Nazaré have a greater responsibility in dignifying surf and in the creation of a unique spot worldwide. Nazaré and Portugal must be in the top mind of the surfing world, since the conditions are unique to the practice of this sport”, added the responsible. The ZON NORTH CANYON SHOW is a three year project, started in 2010, and is developed by Nazaré Qualifica in partnership with the Town Hall of Nazaré and sponsored by ZON. The project includes surfing, tow-in and stand up paddle aiming to internationally promote Nazaré as a reference tourist destination to the practice of big-wave sports and to shoot three documentaries that record the sports activity of Garrett McNamara and the daily life of this village.

The second documentary film will soon debut. The trailer is now available on the Facebook page ZON NORTH CANYON and on the project website. Garrett McNamara is one of the most respected big-wave surfers in the world. During the last decade he has traveled the world in search of new challenges at sea and he was immediately surprised by the waves’ potential of Nazaré, in particular the ones of Praia do Norte, which are under the effect of the phenomenon known as “Canyon of Nazaré”.

This is a rare geomorphologic accident, the biggest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, consisting on a failure on the continental plate with 170 kilometers long and five kilometers deep. The “Nazaré Canyon” channels the swell from the Atlantic Ocean to Praia do Norte creating large waves and providing unique conditions to this sports. The ZON NORTH CANYON SHOW 2012 will be presented on October 4th, at 4, 30 pm at Forte de S. Miguel Arcanjo, in Nazaré, where will be also inaugurated the exhibition “Guardião da Memória” (The Guardian of the Memory). The exhibition can be visited from October 5th on.
