Cruise Ship Terminals on the Gold Coast a Possibility

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 October, 2012 : - - Some of Australia's best known surfers have joined a campaign against the development of a cruise ship terminal on Queensland's Gold Coast. The community group Save Our Spit is opposed to any plan for a cruise ship terminal north of Main Beach. It has more than 4,000 members on Facebook and world champion surfer Mark Occhilupo is now among them.

A statement posted online reads: "I have seen this type of development destroy other places around the world and would hate for it to happen to probably the best wave on the coast." Occhilupo is the latest prominent surfer to speak out. Surfer Mick Fanning also opposes the development of a cruise ship terminal near the Broadwater. A proposal by Singapore-based company Sembawang has been taken off the table but the area is still being considered by other developers.
