Twenty years between wins, ASP Ratings, and Andy Irons...

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 October, 2012 : - - Kelly Slater claimed his 51st elite tour victory on Friday, in France, defeating Dane Reynolds in the Final of the Quiksilver Pro. Kelly adds the Quiksilver Pro France to his impressive list of achievements 20 years after his first professional win in France.

Slater collected a 7.93 and a 9.33 in the opening 10 minutes for impressive tube rides on his forehand. Reynolds fought back but it did not prove enough, giving Slater his first French victory in two decades.

Friday was Slater’s third win of the 2012 season (Fiji, Trestles, France) and moves him to 2nd on the ASP WCT rankings. Joel Parkinson's Equal 3rd place finish moved him into the frontrunner position on the 2012 ASP WCT ratings and he is now focusing on the next event in Portugal.

Kelly Quotes

On winning Quiksilver Pro France for the first time:
“It has literally been 20 years. I had my first win here 20 years ago and that’s pretty crazy. Obviously when you go out there you want to win the heat, but I would have been really stoked if Dane pulled a 10 out of his hat at the end of the heat, it would have been pretty rad.”

On the ASP WcT Ratings:
“When you start working the numbers a little bit, I got that 500 pointer and a 13th, two bad results, already. Parko is sitting on a 9th and a 5th. If I couldn’t get past Parko today, it would have put a lot of pressure on me, but this has now put the pressure back on Mick because Parko, John John and I did well here at this event.”

On taking so long to win the Quiksilver Pro France:
"Maybe I would have done it sooner but Andy (Irons) kept winning them."

On discussing the length of the final with contest director Miky Picon:
"Can we get an hour?"

On the 2012 'Title Race':
"Today's results are Mick's worst-case scenario. All three guys around him did well in this event and Mick got a throwaway [equal-13th] result. The whole race has tightened up. I'm not worrying about it because there is nothing I can really do, but I have to keep getting good results."
