Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 October, 2012 : - - The 22nd edition of the Corona Extra Pro Circuit at Middles Beach in Isabela, Puerto Rico got off to a flying start in clean 2 to 3 foot surf. As the day progressed the conditions deteriorated with a strong onshore wind. Hector Santamaria (Carolina, PR) put on a dominating performance in his opening heat of round 1.
Santamaria read the waves perfectly and used his aerial attack to score a near perfect wave of a 9.7. Utilizing his local knowledge Hector Santamaria found the wave of the day and opened up on the first section with his patented air-reverse, followed by a series of clean top turns and finished the wave off with a reverse onto the sand. Santamaria continued his assault by comboing the field with the high heat total of the day with a 16.97.
The men’s field also saw standout performances from a mix of international talent including surfers Cam Richards (Garden City, SC), Diego Salgado (Panama), Gabe Kling (St. Augustine, FL), Rafael Pereira (Venezula), and last events’ runner-up Brian Toth (Puerto Rico).
Round 2 of the Mens’ Event started off with a bang in Heat 1 with longtime Puerto Rican stand-out Brian Toth, ASP World Championship tour veteran Gabe Kling, the young and up-coming East Coast 17 year old Cam Richards, as well as local heavy-hitter Juan Carlos Gerena. Gabe Kling’s (FL) powerful forehand and backhand hacks were rewarded with a 13.50 heat total and heat win. Not to be outdone by a torrential downpour in the middle of the heat, Brian Toth (PR) was able to stay focused and grind out a 2nd place finish with a 12.00 heat total while Cam Richards (SC) was not far behind in 3rd with a 10.43 and followed by Juan Carlos Gerena (PR) in 4th with a 7.20 total
On the women’s sided of things the girls demonstrated excellent surfing during the completion of Round 1. Stand-out Maria Del Mar Gonzalez (Puerto Rico) proved that her local knowledge paid off by selecting the best waves and comboing a right on her back hand. She was rewarded high wave score of the Women’s Round 1 with an 8.7. Other stand-outs in the women’s pro division included Nikki Viesins (FL), Marissa Shaw (CA), and Idalis Alvarado (PR).
The day finished off with an Expression Session presented by Corona Extra, APSPR, Hang Loose Surf Shop, and High Impact promotion. The expression was a 25 minute, 6 man final with the one best maneuver taking home $400 and 3 cases of Corona Extra. The competitors entertained the audience with high-flying reverses seen by Eduardo Roure (PR) and Alejandro Moreda (PR) but they weren’t enough to hold off Gabe Kling in the last minutes who capitalized on a set wave with a clean forehand grab air reverse. Although he took the win Gabe was nice enough to split his 3 cases of Corona Extra among his thirsty competitors.
Action returns to Middles tomorrow October 7th to crown the 22nd edition of the Corona Extra Men and Womens Pro. The Men’s winner will take home $10,000 and Women’s winner will be awarded $5,0000.
“Surfing fans who are unable to attend in person at Middles will once again have the opportunity to follow the action online with the popular “Heats on Demand” feature”, said APSPR Event Coordinator, Viviannee Vega. At the completion of each day of competition they will have access to every scoring ride of the event. On our website you can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to view and much more. Each scoring ride is shown, along with the points earned for that wave, through the technology of the Beach Byte computer scoring system. Each of the five judges enters their scores for each surfer’s rides into the computer, which tallies the points and decides the winners. All of that scoring information is then available on the APSPR website to anyone with access to a modem.
