Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 October, 2012 : - - KERAMAS, Bali, Indonesia - The 2012 Oakley World Pro Junior Championship got off to a start at Echo Beach, Canggu. The world’s best under-21 surfers showcased their range talent in the 3-to-4 foot surf. All of the competitors were keen to make their mark on this historical event; laying an early foundation to make a play to become the first Men’s ASP World Junior Champion crowned in Indonesia.
Peterson Crisanto (BRA) put on a dominating performance in his opening heat against last year’s runner-up Andrew Doheny (USA) and fellow Brazilian Geovane Ferreira (BRA). Also earning a hall pass through to Round 3 was Koa Smith who laid down a solid 16.6 to send 2010 ASP World Junior Champ Jack Freestone into the repercharge round.
2009 ASP World Junior Champion, Maxime Huscenot (FRA), is competing as a junior surfer for the last time at the 2012 Oakley World Pro Junior Championship and he’s looking to make the most of it. Connor Coffin (USA) overcame a slow start against Deivid Silva (BRA) and Taylor Clark (USA). Coffin went to work in the second half of the heat to pinch the lead and advance directly to Round 3.
Vicente Romero (ESP), caused the upset of the day when he defeated reigning ASP World Junior Champion Caio Ibelli (BRA). It was an action packed heat in which Ibelli went wave for wave with Romero. In the end, it would be Romero who triumphed. Michael February (ZAF) also prospered in the ample conditions posting one of the highest heat totals of the day to defeat the event’s top seed, Keanu Asing (HAW) and local trials runner-up Nyoman Satria (IND).
The Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali runs from October 6 – 17.
