Thomas Meyerhoffer wins Best of Show; Huge Crowds Flood Surfboard Show

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 October, 2012 : - - Floridian surfboard craftsman Ricky Carroll took home his third title in the Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters Shape-off presented by US Blanks honoring shaper/surfer Mark Richards. Carroll and five other shapers (Reno Abellira, Jon Pyzel, Pat Rawson, Wayne Rich, Taz Yassin) replicated an iconic MR twin fin that Richards hand-shaped in 1981.

"I want to thanks Mark (Richards) for including me in this competition," said Carroll. "It's an honor to win and the other shapers are craftsman of incredible skill and pedigree."

as a shaper/surfer who influenced his career both competitively and as a surfboard builder. "Reno showed up at the Surfabout in 1974 with a quiver of six surfboards. This was a time when we traveled to surf contests with with one board. Reno had a twin-fin Fish, similar to what Steve Lis was making. He (Abellira) was blowing us away with how fast he flew around on the waves as the rest of us labored on heavy single fins. It changed my way of thinking."

The sensational and stylistic MR firmly stamped his mark on surfing history by winning the ASP world title four-times. One of only two world champions to shape and compete on his own handcrafted surfboards (PT), the legendary MR watched with great interest as all six shapers replicated a classic MR twin fin. A board that MR
shaped, sprayed, glassed, ans sanded all by himself. And oh yeah, then Richards went out and won the Mainstay Magnum 500 (South Africa 1982) ASP event on the board.

Thomas Meyerhoffer won the Best of Show award and a full-page ad in SURFER Magazine with a conceptual surfboard that impressed the judges with both its design and construction. "I'm super stoked as  they were a bunch of incredible boards in the Best of Show competition. The eye-candy and the mind bending concepts were great to look at. It's nice to see out-of-the-box designs acknowledged."

A record crowd flocked to The Boardroom International Surfboard Show to check out the the great surfboards, meet shapers and designers, and take in all the events and exhibits. Close to 4000 surfboard lovers walked the floor on Saturday and an additional 2000 enjoyed Sundays events. The show took place October 6 & 7, 2012 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and honored the ultimate surfer / shaper, 4X World Champion Mark Richards (MR), during the Icons of Foam Shaping Tribute presented by US Blanks.

A live webcast, featuring hosts Dave Stanfield and Todd Kline, sent the entire show to an international audience. A State of the Surfboard Industry roundtable discussion, hosted by GrindTV's Chris Mauro, featured industry insight from the likes of PT, Pat Rawson, and Maurice Cole. The roundtable focused on the consumer and enthusiast surfer. You can view summary versions of the entire webcast on FACEBOOK.COM/THEBOARDROOMSHOW OR YouTube.
