Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 October, 2012 : - - The Florida Surfing Championships left their mark this weekend, bringing the largest surfing competition and celebration to ever hit Jacksonville Beach. The event took place October 4-7 presenting pro/am surfing, live music featuring the Wailers, vendor village, surf art show, Open Water SUP and Kayak Challenge, Surf & Sun 5k and more.
Two Jacksonville Beach professional surfers represented their home break and became the Florida Surfing Champions this weekend. Cody Thompson won the $10,000 Goal Zero Pro and Kayla Durden won the $1,000 Viridian Women Pro. Further representing the state of Florida, St. Augustine's Dagan McNally won the $1,000 Longboard Pro and Eros Exarhou of Ormond Beach won the $2,500 House of Marley Junior Pro. All the competitors brought a quite a show to the beach as the top surfers of Florida and surrounding areas competed for over $30,000 in cash and prizes.
The Seawalk Celebration took place on Saturday with live music all day, featuring the Wailers 20th Anniversary show. The Seawalk Pavilion was the place to be as the local community enjoyed a surf-art show, live music all day, food, beer, eco-village, Grom Zone, and Open Water SUP and Kayak Challenge. The music was top-notch featuring Izzi Gomez, Fusebox Funk, Split Tone and the Wailers, who put on quite a show, sending good vibrations throughout the beaches.
Closing off a terrific weekend, Sunday featured all pro/am surfing finals, the Surf & Sun 5k, and the awards party at Salt Life Food Shack. The shack was buzzing with the surfing community, as the top four competitors from each division received their one of a kind Florida Surfing Championship trophies and prize bags. Not not only were the Florida Surfing Champions titled, but the Salt Life Big Wave Challenge winners were awarded. Local riders Mitch Kaufmann and Lesley Curry in combination with their photographers Jim Walker and Lorraine Hernandez (respectively) became the 2012 Salt Life Big Wave Challenge Champions!
