Day 6 turns into 'Young Guns Day' in Peniche

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 October, 2012 : - - Supertubos, Peniche, Portugal – A short day Peniche on Mondayat with just two heats staged. The small but clean 2-3ft waves became too inconsistent on the high tide for the crucial round three heats. Before competition halted, John John Florence and Gabriel Medina both pulled out their arsenal of  ‘new school moves’ advancing into RD4 with ease.

Florence took advantage of his opponents loss of priority after a crucial mistake.  Travis Logie was holding down a narrow lead before handing the Hawaiian tour rookie control of the line-up.  With ten minutes remaining Florence pulled off a 'full rotation aerial maneuver' on a better set-wave to take the heat lead and win.

The world title contender competed with five stitches in his head after a free-surfing accident two days ago. Florence said he was feeling fine and relieved to advance into the business end of event.

Gabriel Medina dominated a high flying affair over Brett Simpson in heat 2 opening with 7.83 ride to leave the Californian to play catch-up for the entire match-up.  Medina impressed on both his backhand and forehand with a number of progressive maneuvers to take the Round 3 win.

Contest director Damien Hardman said he is aiming for a Friday finishfor the Rip Curl Pro Portugal and will re-access conditions again at Supertubos at 7.45am tomorrow morning for a possible 8am start.
