Wahu Surfer Groms Comps kicks off in fun waves at Coffs Harbour

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 October, 2012 : - - Fun little waves rolled into Coffs Harbour today for the first day of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps. The first event of the eight-event series saw 80-plus surfers - under-15 years of age - attack fun and punchy two-foot beach-break waves at Diggers Beach. The performance levels were exciting from the moment the first hooter sounded to kick off competition for the under-15 boys.

Shane Dennis managed to lock in a flurry of high scores in the first heat to take down a red hot Samson Coulter. Other standout surfers in the under-15 boys included Frank Murphy, Chilla Beeby, Brody Pullinger and Alex Hayes.

In the under-13 boys, Connor Lee stole the show early performing multiple critical maneuvers within a tight space. Connor took the win from Tai Donelan, Harrison Jacobs and Marcus Whillock who finished second, third and fourth respectively. Caleb Tancred was another standout in the under-13s winning his first heat convincingly. The Avoca surfer threw down a series of micro airs and lightening fast turns to steal the win from Boston Phillips, Zackery Lancaster and Lachlan Joseph.

Fresh off a win at the Rip Curl GromSearch in Cronulla earlier this month, Alyssa Lock continued to build on her heat winning momentum taking first place in both the under-15s and under-13s division. The Tweed Heads goofy footer scored a total of 14.17 to win her under-15s heat and 12.16 to win her under-13s heat. Cedar Leigh-Jones also managed to take two wins in the under-9s and the under-11s girls division. The powerful grommet notched up a ton of good scores on lengthy waves to take dual heat wins.

On land, kids participated in a range of beach games where contestants and spectators had the opportunity to compete in Wahu activities like Cricket Catches, Crumbed Cutlets and a Soccer Shootout. Some of the prizes included soccer balls, mini-footballs, cricket balls and bodyboards. 2012 is the first year the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp has been held at Coffs Harbour.

Each entrant also received a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps t-shirt for entering, plus a Wahu beach product. The respective winners of the under-13 boys' and girls' finals from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre on March 8-10, 2013.

Divisions include: U/15 Boys and U/15 Girls, U/13 Boys and U/13 Girls, U/11 Boys and U/11 Girls, U/9 Boys and U/9 Girls (Parent assist) and U/7 Boys and Girls mixed division (Parent assist).
