Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 October, 2012 : - - Sydney - Hundreds of spectators lined the beachfront walkways at North Cronulla for the first day of the Dominelli Women’s Surf Classic today.
Beautiful two-to-three-foot surf greeted competitors early in the day, however a strong southerly wind slowly began to eat away at the conditions by the time the second heat of the day kicked off. Despite the tricky circumstances, the women had very little drama adapting to the fun, but sometimes-difficult surf.
Alysse Cooper, Kiara Meredith, Alyssa Lock and Macy Callaghan were all early standouts in the 13-and-under division. Philippa Anderson, Freya Prumm, Grace Spiers, Steph Single and Skye Burgess all lead the charge in their respective heats as part of the Open Shortboard division. Both Grace and Freya managed to lock in heat totals over 16.00 to steal their individual heats.
In the stand up paddle-boarding, Erin Dark took the heat convincingly with a heat total of 9.17. The Gerringong goofy-foot trimmed along the punchy peaks with ease to steal the win from Cheryl Steer and Melissa Mcmanus.
Novocastrian surfer and event top seed Philippa Anderson locked in the highest heat score of the day for her efforts in her 20-and-under heat. Philippa, smashed out a chain of forehand re-entries and cutbacks to score a heat total of 18.33. Other standouts in the 20-and-under division were Paris Whittaker, Steph Single and Grace Spiers.
