App keeps eye on Australian surf spots
Australia launches 'Surf Search' app
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 November, 2012 : - - With the number of mobile phones in use in Australia outweighing our population, it’s not surprising that we are expecting them to deliver more than the capacity to send and receive calls. Mobile phones have become more like small, portable computers that can also be used to send and receive calls. Mobile phone users are also using their phones to download software applications, known as “apps”. Apps increase the number of things you can do with your phone.
University of Newcastle student, Jake Foster of Empire Bay, is part of a generation that relies on his mobile phone to keep in touch with friends, check the weather forecast, and view store products and services. Being a local surfer and photographer, he would also like to check out surf conditions in his favourite spots. When travelling, Jake always takes his board in search of surfing locations.
Jake has used his knowledge of surfing to create an application that provides you with easily accessible information about surfing locations. ‘Surf Search’ is a detailed report card of every major surfing location throughout Australia. It is an atlas of surfing breaks showing the breaks ideal conditions including wave type and direction, wind, swell direction and tide details.
There is also a ‘locate break’ function that will show you the nearest 5 surfing locations to where you are and give you directions to their location. This is an ideal app for surfing and travelling, as you are able to find breaks throughout Australia. The many months of research and development that have gone into this app, have been in addition to this ambitious 21year olds teaching/architecture studies at the University of Newcastle.
The ‘Surf Search’ app is available for download now. If you would like more information about this app, or would like to provide feedback on its features, you can email Jake at jake_foster33 @ hotmail.com
