'Awaken the Spirit' art show and silent auction

Quiksilver Foundation Updates
'Awaken the Spirit' art show and silent auction this week
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 November, 2012 : - - Next weekend Quiksilver kicks off an exciting time for surfers and surf fans as it opens its doors for the free 'Awaken the Spirit' art show and silent auction at Quiksilver's headquarters, 27 Baines Crescent, Torquay on Friday 16th November 5 – 9 pm. Funds are being raised to enable disadvantaged children to participate in the 2013 Vegemite SurfGrom's program.
'Awaken the Spirit' will feature the work of 30 local artists in the atrium at Quiksilver’s headquarters for a silent auction as well as two limited draw art raffles. Art, photos and sculptures will be displayed in the Atrium, a space that truly lends itself to an exhibition of this kind.
Visitors will meet artists and Quiksilver surfers, including five-time world champion Steph Gilmore, former world champion Tom Carroll, Martin Potter and Mark Richards. The champs are in town for the Awaken the Spirit World Champions Ball, and some will also make an appearance at Surf Fest in Jan Juc the following day.
There will be a sausage sizzle, wood fire pizza, a bar full of cold beer and local wine all at family friendly prices. Kids can borrow a skate board and try their hand at tarp surfing whilst adults can have a drink and bid for their favourite piece of art.
Quiksilver Foundation’s marketing manager and ex-world championship tour surfer Troy Brooks said the surfing experience was something some children might not be able to afford. “Teaching surf education and ocean safety should be essential for every child. You get just as much excitement learning as you do in the barrel, and it takes a while to wipe the smiles off their faces. Quiksilver wants to awaken the spirit of surfing and the perfect way to do that is with ocean education and giving kids the opportunity to surf.”
Check out the digital invite from Foundation ambassador and two time world champion Tom Carroll believes catching your first wave is such a powerful moment, it will stay with you for the rest of your life.
Two prominent local artists Nick Morris and Jenny Laidlaw have donated paintings for 2 limited draw raffles. Nick Morris' original artwork "Win" is a typical Morris composition, acrylic on canvas 1000mm x 1500mm valued at $4000. One hundred tickets will be available to purchase at a cost of $40 per ticket. The art is on display at the Quiksilver storer. Jenny Laidlaw's original mounted & framed artwork "Full Spectrum" 750mm x 650mm is valued at $1680 with only 200 tickets available at $20 per ticket. Jenny's art is on display at the Roxy store.
Bidding for the silent auction will be open to the public from 5pm on Friday 16th November and will be closed at 8pm sharp that evening. Successful bidders will be announced that evening. Both the Morris and Laidlaw art raffles will also be drawn that evening.
