Chayne Simpson, Kyle Brant and Simon Farrer roll in heated final
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 November, 2012 : - - Conditions did a 180-degree turn for the second and final day of round three of the Australian Kneeboard Titles.
The howling southerly winds that plagued the idyllic Kiama area yesterday were a thing of the past when the event resumed at Werri Beach for the last day of the event. Again, the locals led the charge from the moment the first hooter sounded, with Simon Farrer, Albert Munoz and Chayne Simpson tearing apart the fun three-to-four foot beachbreaks.
Simon Farrer continued to build on his momentum from yesterday throwing down a large variety of big turns and giant floaters to progress into the final. North Wollongong’s Chayne Simpson was another standout in the early rounds performing an array of critical maneuvers to move through the semis and into the final.
John Clingan, President of Kneeboard Surf Australia said: “We can’t put into words how happy we are with the success of this event and to see such a large number of women, children and bunch of new faces getting involved in the sport. It’s great to see kneeboarding growing in leaps and bounds. To have entrants came from as far away as Venezuela and Ireland is just awesome. It’s also the perfect prelude to the forthcoming World Championships in Tahiti. A massive thanks goes out to all the people who helped out.”
In the Amateur B final, Darren Cooper came hard of the gates early locking in a bunch of high scoring waves to take a solid lead. He took the win from Craig Tinsley, Carl Heidke and Tom Newton who all finished in second, third and fourth respectively. Mark Mcleod took an early lead in the Amateur A final laying down a series of powerful tail-throws and carves to nail down first position. Dane Rennie fought a hard battle, but unfortunately had to settle for the runner-up spot.
Warriewood’s Tom Novakov hit the lineup confidently in his Cadets final tearing apart multiple waves in quick succession. Tom took the win with Liam Taurins in second, Gustavo Pontenza in third and Jed Collis in fourth.
Event standout Kyle Bryant backed up his earlier competitive excellence with a victory in the Open men’s final. The Avoca kneeboarder surfed an incredible half-hour final, which saw the lead bounce back and forth between him and Simon Farrer. When the final hooter sounded it was Kyle who got the nod with Simon in second, Chayne Simpson in third and Matt Novakov in fourth.
Kyle also won $1000.00 for coming first in the event. A carton of VB was awarded to the Wollongong Area Kneeboarding Association (WAKA) for their efforts in the progression of kneeboarding.
Wayne Jennings scored himself a carton of VB for the best wipeout of the event. Simon Farrer also won a slab of VB for performing the best turn of the event. Gustavo Pontenza threw down a flurry of awesome turns leading up to the Cadets final. For his efforts, Gustavo won the "Carve Of The Day" award and a pair of Carve polarized eyewear.
