Looking like Nat Young has qualified for the 2013 World Tour

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 November, 2012 : - - Nat Young heard he offically made the ASP World Tour on Friday, joining the ranks to the top 34 surfers in the world. But Young, 21, wasn't celebrating. And he won't until an ASP official delivers the news to him directly. Young, ranked No. 20 in the world, has reason for skepticism. Last year he thought he had done everything necessary to claim a World Tour spot, only to see it yanked away.

He was the highest-ranked non-World Tour surfer competing in the Van's Triple Crown. As such, Young saw himself as a shoo-in wild card for the Pipeline Masters. But changes to the tour structure and questionable distribution of wild cards led to Young's ommission from Pipeline and, as a matter of course, the World Tour.

This time around, Young put himself in even better position. And when he won his Round of 96 heat Friday at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the webcast commentators declared him in. "We have been told that Nat Young has qualified for the tour for next year," said Heath Walker during the broadcast. With the win, Young moves to the round of 64, where he will surf Saturday against Travis Logie, Tiago Pires and Alain Riou.

According to the ASP's numbers guru Al Hunt said Young and two others are guaranteed a spot on the 2013 World Tour regardless of how they fare at Haleiwa and the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, the first and second legs of the triple crown. "Glen Hall and Filipe Toledo are in for sure," Hunt told Surfline. "But I can't see why Nat Young will miss out either."
