Surfers blast ban talk at Manly Beach

Surf Ban in Manly ?
Surfers blast ban talk at Manly Beach
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 November, 2012 : - - Surfers are reacting strongly to a call for a surf ban at South Steyne in Manly Beach. Clontarf swimmer Max Thomson has proposed to make the southernmost part of South Steyne available to swimmers only - even before and after the lifeguard patrol flags are up each day. Thomson made the calls in The Manly Daily newspaper after his wife was hit by a surfboard on Monday morning.
Many surfers reacted along the lines of: "I think the guys (surfers) who make the effort to get up as early as they do before the flags come up, I think they deserve to share that area. There are so many other spots around the area that are good for swimming ... For example, like on the other side, in the harbour. It is much calmer there, it's flat and it is a much safer swimming area."
One of the comments said that "there'd be anarchy" if a surf ban was put in place. Another said: "Surfers already have enough restrictions to when and where they can surf, swimmers have no restrictions to when or where." Another reader offered an alternative for swimmers. "Perhaps if this person is concerned he should stay out of the surf until the flags are put up each morning, or perhaps use one of the many nearby ocean pools."
