Mikey February and Tanika Hoffman dominate Liquid Blast WP Surfing Championships
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 December, 2012 : - - Michael February and Tanika Hoffman dominated proceedings at the 2012 Liquid Blast WP Surfing Championships held at Kalk Bay Reef on Saturday and Misty Cliffs on Sunday. February was unbeatable throughout the event, clinching the WP titles in both the Under 20 and Open men’s divisions and receiving an additional R1 500 for the Liquid Blast ‘Master Blaster’ award.
The lanky 19-year-old from Kommetjie was also crowned the 2012 WP Surfer of the Year at the awards ceremony following the contest for his outstanding performances locally, nationally and internationally.
Hoffman demonstrated the experience she has gained after spending virtually the whole year based in France and competing internationally by securing both the U20 and Open women’s titles. The petite 20 year-old from Clifton is hoping to spend another year overseas in 2013.
The junior boys’ events were completed in challenging surf at Kalk Bay Reef on Saturday with Max Elkington taking the U11 title, Ethan Fletcher the U13’s, Jordy Maree the U15’s and Ethan Pentz the U17’s.
The event was moved Misty Cliffs on Sunday where Ruth Armstrong collected the U15 girls’ title, Samantha Sutton the U17’s and Carolyn Dent the Over 35 women’s crown.
Rory Heard was the winner of the men’s Over 35 division, Steven Gadd took the O40’s, Dave Jenkins the O45’s, Dave Stubbs the O50’s and Hans Kamhoot the O55’s.
The awards function began with the results of the WP Inter-school League which was run during the second and third terms and won by SACS 1st Team followed by Wynberg, SACS 2nd Team, Fish Hoek and Constantia Waldorf.
The special awards to honour those who contributed to WP Surfing throughout the year included the Kirk Cotrell trophy which went to Ashley Legg. Dillon Lowenthal was the Top Judge, Chris Bond the Surf Shack Coach of the Year, Benji Brand the Junior Surfer of the Year, Steven Gadd the top Master and Roxy Davis received the Friendship award.
Photographer Greg Chapman of chappypix.co.za took the Media award, Neil Zietsman the Sportsmanship award and the Achievement award went to big wave charger Frank Solomon who finished the 2012 season No. 10 in the Big Wave World Tour rankings.
The Basil Lomberg Memorial Trophy, which honours the man who re-launched the International Surfing Association (ISA) in the late 1970’s and rewards the top Western Province administrator annually, deservedly went to Karen Elkington.
Bruce Anderson, who retired as Chairman at the AGM but will stay on as Treasurer of the association, was presented with a custom surfboard in recognition of his many years of selfless dedication and support.
The ceremony ended with a rousing cheer of appreciation for Ari Laspatsis of Liquid Blast Energy Drink who came on board as the sponsor of the WP Surfing Championships and generously contributed substantialprize-money and support for the event.
