Carlos Macias refused to cut hair until he collected one metric ton of trash

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 December, 2012 : - - Captain Carlos Macias a local waterman now with a 9 inch beard will be sitting in a hair stylist chair for the first time in over a year after protesting not to cut his hair or shave until he collected 1 metric ton of plastics from South Florida waterways. The event will take place on Sunday, December 16, 2012, starting at noon, at Southport Raw Bar/ Brownies Southport Divers Dock

Macias, a Boat Captain and Surfrider Foundation member became enraged by the amount of trash he encounters daily in our South Florida waterways and was inspired to make a difference.

Macias's  mission was to collect 2200lbs of plastic from atop of  his standup paddle board and educated anyone he encountered about plastic pollution. He  developed a net that attaches to a paddle called Environet and whenever possible launched his paddle board and collected plastic from our waterways.

His tireless effort to educate people about pollution has taken him to Nicaragua and Portugal but his primary focus are the waterways of  Ft. Lauderdale.  Macias along with many volunteers  would launch a flotilla of standup paddle boards from  Brownies Southport Divers and Southport Raw Bar  in Ft. Lauderdale and collect plastic and trash using the Environets along the 15 Street waterway.

An event to honor his accomplishment is planned for Sunday, December 16, 2012 from 12:00 to ?  Hosted by  South Port Raw Bar 1536 Cordova Road Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 (954) 525-2526 and Brownie's Southport Divers 1530 Cordova Road Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33316 (954)524-2112. The event will include food, music and the official cutting of Captain Carlos Macias hair and beard.
