Mitch Crews fires up groms at Surfing Australia Pro Surfer Camp
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 December, 2012 : - - Leading Australian surfer Mitch Crews knew he had a pretty good time as a grom, but he never got the chance to surf with his heroes while growing up. Fifteen young surfers had that chance during the week when Crews hosted his own Surfing Australia Pro Surfer Camp.
Held at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) at Casuarina in northern New South Wales, the groms had the chance to meet Crews, go surfing with him and then pick his brain on what it takes to be a professional surfer. “I didn’t realise how switched on some of them would be,” Crews said. “They’re really interested in what we actually do and not just joking around. They want to learn and achieve amazing things.
“When I was a kid all I did was surf, surf, surf and didn’t think about anything else. It’s cool now the kids can come here and learn, and they have the best facilities for it. “I never got a chance like this, but with the HPC the kids have the best access to some of the top surfers in the world. When I was younger I would have been so stoked to come and hang out with my idol.”
Crews finished 79th on the ASP Men’s World Ranking this year and is enjoying a final break before making a serious crack next year at qualifying for the 2014 World Tour. “I’ll be going full tilt on qualifying next year and I plan to knuckle down and give it all I have to get on Tour. I’m bringing a new mindset and a new confidence,” Crews said.
The Mitch Crews Surfing Australia Pro Surfer Camp was the first of the Summer Pro Surfer Camps, with the Wright siblings – Owen, Tyler and Mikey – hosting a camp in January followed by World Tour competitors Bede Durbidge and Sally Fitzgibbons.
