Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 December, 2012 : - - The Bureh Town Community has been identified as the best surfing spot in the country.  In this light, the Western Area Peninsular Forest Reserve (WAPFR) in collaboration with a good will philanthropist by the name of Shane O’Connor, on Saturday December 8th, 2012 officially handed over the Bureh Beach Surf Club to boost surfing in the country.

Mr Jochen, Manager of  Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH), disclosed that he wanted  the peninsular to be a National Park Reserve and called on  the chairman of the occasion Hon. Kemeokoh Conteh to support the ratification in Parliament and pleaded with the people to manage the natural resources.

Mr Shane O’Connor, the Philanthropist said he was glad to be in Sierra Leone to see the opening of the club and the official handing over. He thanked the head man of the village, Master Gbril Bendu for the reception and good hospitality accorded him.

The Headman of Bureh Town, in his statement on behalf of the entire community, heartily welcomed the audience to what he referred to as a remarkable ceremony “the formal opening and handing over of Bureh Beach Surf Club is sincerely a dream come true and your presence in this gathering make this day a reality,” Bendu opined.

As the name connotes “Bureh Beach Surf Club” is the only beach along the Freetown peninsular with such a wonderful feature such as the surfing spot.

The village head furthered that, “Apparently, it will interest everybody here to know that surfing started in Bureh about 15 years back. Surfing was introduced then by some French guys called Vensor, Album and Freddo. Upon their visit before the 10 years war in Sierra Leone, one of our brothers in Bureh became a professional surfer also. This sport collapsed during the war and our heroes in this discipline stopped due to lack of motivation and found something else to do.”
