Duo claim victory in the Under 16 category at Rip Curl GromSearch

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 December, 2012 : - - Sunshine Coast, Queensland -- Kai Hing (Wurtulla, Qld) and Sophie McCulloch (Alexandra Headland, Qld) claimed victory today in the blue ribbon 16 and Under Boys and 16 and Under Girls divisions at the final leg of the 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch series presented by Telstra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

With a persistent 1.5m rolling in at Coolum Beach, Hing snatched victory from the Gold Coast’s Luke Hynd (Burleigh Heads, Qld) by the absolute slimmest of margins 14.67 points to Hynd’s 14.66 (out of a possible 20) with 0.01 separating the top two placegetters, as Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW – 12.77) and Chris Zaffis (Angourie, NSW – 12.24) finished third and fourth respectively.

Meanwhile, Sophie McCulloch took out the 16 & under Girls final by less than one point, pipping Holly Wawn (Newport, NSW – 9.80), Cali McDoagh (Lennox Head, NSW – 8.17) and Isabella Nichols (Coolum, Qld – 6.00).

Concluding tomorrow, this week’s culmination of the series also includes the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final, which will see previous event winners and ratings leaders in the blue ribbon 16 and under Girls and Boys divisions go head-to-head for the chance to compete at next year’s International GromSearch final, held in conjunction with the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

In almost an identical re-match of today’s proceedings, Kai Hing (Wurtulla, Qld), Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW) and Luke Hynd (Burleigh Heads, Qld) will contest the 16 & under Boys national final, while Sophie McCulloch (Alexandra Headland, Qld), Laura Poncini (Caloundra, Qld), Holly Wawn (Newport, NSW), Cali McDoagh (Lennox Head, NSW) and Isabella Nichols (Coolum, Qld) will contest the 16 & under Girls national final.
