Tropical Cyclone Dumile Ramps Up

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 January, 2013 : - - Tropical Cyclone Dumile is gathering steam over the western South Indian Ocean. Residents from Madagascar to Mauritius will be watching the storm's progress. Dumile, still a moderate tropical storm on Tuesday, was beginning to veer southward a few hundred miles east of northern Madagascar, and nearly 600 miles north-northwest of Mauritius.

The remote island of Agalega, lying within 100 to 150 miles northwest of the cyclone center, was hit with more than 17 inches of rain between Sunday and Tuesday. Tropical Cyclone Dumile, as of 0530 UTC Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, was located east of northernmost Madagascar.

Official forecast agencies, Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the Tropical Cyclone Center of Reunion were forecasting a mostly southward course by Dumile Wednesday and Thursday. Strengthening to a strong hurricane was also forecast.

The forecast track would be well east of Madagascar, but it would bring some of the storm's heavy rain and wind to bear at the island of Reunion, west of Mauritius.

Friday and beyond, Dumile will race southeastward over cool seas, loosing tropical cyclone status.
