Cyclone Freda provides barrels for Dave Rastovich, Luke Egan, Mark Occhilupo and crew
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 January, 2013 : - - Gold Coast, Queensland - - The remnants of tropical cyclone Freda provided competing surfers with consistent Burleigh barrels on day one of the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Festival, presented by Billabong.
Crowds gathered in droves at the famed Burleigh headland for a step back into surfing’s history and to witness former pro surfers and locals duke it out. Spectators and competitors were greeted with sunshine and 1.5m, clean conditions and the infamous Burleigh Point did not disappoint.
Current World Junior Champion, Jack Freestone was the first cab off the rank and did not waste any time in pulling into some throaty tubes. Professional surfers Dave Rastovich, Luke Egan and Mark Occhilupo also managed the odd deep barrel, much to the delight of the full-house of spectators lining Burleigh’s rocky shoreline.
Local surfer James Lewis used all 10 of his allotted waves and repeatedly pulled into and emerged from several square Burleigh kegs. The fun will continue well into the afternoon with a live performance by Ash Grunwald on the point, and competition will resume tomorrow with similar conditions expected for competitors.
Everyone is invited to attend and peruse the huge display of antique surfboards and memorabilia, and also chat with modern surfboard shapers who will be displaying their retro designed craft.
The single-fin competition caters for surfers from 10 to 50 years of age, all surfing on boards made prior to 1985. Some grommets will be ripping on boards twice their own age!
