Grommets learn the Wright Stuff at Surfing Australia Pro Surfer Camp

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 January, 2013 : - - A group of eager grommets got a double dose of the Wright stuff at this week’s Surfing Australia Pro Surfer Camp hosted by World Tour competitors Owen and Tyler Wright. Sixteen young surfers had the best of both worlds as the Wright siblings hit the waves with them.

Held at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) at Casuarina in northern New South Wales, the groms had the chance to meet Owen and Tyler, go surfing with them and then pick their brains on what it takes to be a professional surfer.

“It’s the best place to come,” said Tyler. “You can watch yourself surf, you can surf a bunch with heaps of cool people and you have the coaches who break it down all the way to the basics.

“The coaches are really psyched on surfing and helping the kids out. It’s all about the kids coming here and learning to surf, learning technique and new things and helping the kids become independent in the water, especially when competing.

“I look at all these young kids coming through who are only between eight and 12 and I think, 'we’re (Australia) going to be killing it in the future'."

With both surfers preparing for the opening ASP World Tour event the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast from 2nd March, Owen said working with the grommets provided a timely reminder for his own surfing. Last year, Owen finished 10th on the World Tour and Tyler finished fourth.

“It’s great surfing with them and trying to help them get better,” Owen said. “That’s all they want to do. And it helps me as I remind myself that’s what you’re supposed to do.

“You come to the High Performance Centre and with your technique you get the coaches that know not just how you did it, but also why it happened and what body position you were supposed to be in as you listen to them break it down. I’m like, 'that’s right', and I’m figuring things out just as much as the grommets so it works on all levels.

“If I fall off it’s because I didn’t do the fundamentals they are teaching here at the camp. I bogged that turn because I didn’t lift my arm up high enough and that’s what they are teaching to the youngest kids. They may not be able to do the same turn as I can, but the technique is the same. It’s great on all levels, from a high level professional to someone who just wants to improve.”

The Owen and Tyler Wright Pro Surfer Camp was the second of the Summer Pro Surfer Camps following the Mitch Crews Pro Surfer Camp in December. The Bede Durbidge Pro Surfer Camp will be held this week followed by the Sally Fitzgibbons Pro Surfer Camp next week.
