Coolum Beach hosts 2013 opener as local favourite Heazlewood builds momentum
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 January, 2013 : - - Sunshine Coast, Queensland -- Grommets from all over Queensland have invaded Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast for day-one of competition at the Wahu Surfer Grom Comp – Sunshine Coast.
Grommets were met with crumbly 1m waves and wasted no time in paddling out and tearing them to bits. Local favourite Reef Heazlewood (Moffat Beach, QLD) set a good pace in the Under 15 Boys division, progressing through his round one heat with a combined two-wave heat total of 14.5 (out of a possible of 20).
Heazlewood comfortably secured a place in tomorrow’s blue ribbon division final alongside Aaron Kelly (Sunshine Beach, QLD), Kane Landsberg (Caloundra, QLD) and Connor Lyons (Castaways Beach, QLD).
While the competing surfers blazed out in the lineup, games of Dodgeball and Touch Football lit up the beach with an array of Wahu prizes on offer for beach-game winners. The surfer groms comps cater for the mini, mirco groms (U/7) and the big kids alike (U/15) of any level, and is all about providing a fun, but competitive environment.
Divisions include: U/15 Boys and U/15 Girls, U/13 Boys and U/13 Girls, U/11 Boys and U/11 Girls, U/9 Boys and U/9 Girls (Parent assist) and U/7 Boys and Girls mixed division (Parent assist). As an added bonus to the series, the respective winners of the Under 13 boy’s and girl’s division from each event will receive an invite to attend the exclusive, all expenses paid three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centres.
Spectators are encouraged to come down and find a spot on the sand to witness the depth of the Sunshine Coast’s talent pool and meet some of Queensland’s next crop of surfing superstars.
Competitors and spectators are encouraged to call the Surfing Queensland Event Hotline on Ph# (07) 3030 6388 after 6:30am each morning of competition for event location and start time.
