Hanging with Tom Curren in Ventura and Santa Barbara

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 January, 2013 : - - The swell charts were looking good and Tom Curren claimed to have a few spots up his sleeve, so the South Coast boys packed their bags to head north.  We rolled around the corner of a Ventura hideaway where Tom sat watching his boys, Frank and Pat, tear up a left-hand beach break.

After the long drive from San Diego, the crew was determined to grab some grinds before hopping in the water.  We crossed the road to Taco Surf and enjoyed some burritos while talking story before setting our sights on the waves.

We continued north after lunch letting the massive lead balls in our stomach subside while keeping our eyes on the point breaks peeling down the coast.  After a fun surf, we head up to Santa Barbara, grabbed a Habit Burger and got ready for another great day of surfing with TC.

“It was rad getting to run around with Tom in his home town,” said Evan. “Tom took us to a secret spot the second day and no one was around. It was killer!” he added, referring to a little hidden gem in the Santa Barbara area that turned on with the swell. Tom knew just where to go to find a few barreling wedges before we hopped back in The Search-mobile to head home.

The great thing about this is that both guys had never surfed above San Clemente and this was their first look at what Cali’s central coast has to offer.
