Queensland Young Emerging Surfers Prominent In Quality Surf At Breaka Burleigh Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 February, 2013 : - - Burleigh Heads, Australia -- Queensland emerging young surfers stole the show at the Breaka Burleigh Pro on the Gold Coast today. Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta) at just 14 years of age he showed competitive experience way beyond his years by advancing to round three. Bruce came from behind late in the heat to jump from 3rd to 2nd place behind Japan’s Hirotio Arai in the four man heat to advance.

“I’m surfing this event for the experience and so-far-so-good, I’m just concentrating on surfing as good as I can and not worrying about who I come up against – I’ll take that strategy into round three as well” said Quinn. It gets tougher every round for Bruce as higher seeds are introduced into the event and in round three he’ll face experienced campaigners in Jordi Watson (Aus) and Portugal’s Jose Ferreria.

Sunshine Coast/Coolum 18-year-old Jack Duggan also impressed in the super clean quality 1m (3 feet) surf at Burleigh Heads today. Duggan defeated USA surfer Noah Erickson in a relatively high scoring heat and it was his successful mid-heat high degree of difficulty aerial move that saw him post an excellent 8.5 score and eventually take a good heat win.

The Breaka is Duggan’s first ASP World Tour event and he’s hoping his early round successes can spur him onto a possible professional surfing career.

Kai Hing (Sunshine Coast – 15 years of age) again had a great round two heat win defeating and eliminating internationals Takumi Nakamura (Jpn) and Roland LeFeuvre (Fra) and Coolangatta 17-year-old Noa Deane capped off a super successful day for the young emerging surfers by putting on a high flying aerial display to take an easy win over Rafael Teixeira of Brazil.

Deane is renown for his flamboyant style and he pulled two stylish aerial moves on the one wave today. ”The Breaka at Burleigh is my favourite event” said Deane. “We always get quality waves here that allow you to go for big moves – even when it’s quite small, the wave is good and allows for performance – I love it here.”

Late in the day Newcatle surfer Jesse Adam blazed through his heat with the highest scoring tally of the day, 16.54 out of a possible 20 in an impressive display of fluid power surfing.

Others to impress today included veteran Darren O’Rafferty who advanced with Nathan Webster and Gold Coast locals John Cummings and Chris Bennetts who both powered to solid heat wins. Of the internationals, Japan’s Hiroto Arai and Tahiti’s Meteia Hiquily were both good scoring heat winners. The event really ramps up in the coming days with high seeds entering the water.

The Breaka Burleigh Women’s is down to just 12 surfers remaining including the top three seeds in Sally Fitzgibbons (Aus), Tyler Wright (Aus) and Courtney Conlogue (USA) who are world ranked 2,4 and 5 respectively.

There’s every chance these girls will surf tomorrow morning depending on conditions while the top seeded men’s division surfers in Mick Fanning, Owen Wright and Bede Durbidge could enter the water as early as tomorrow but more likely on Thursday.

Conditions are favourable for good surf particularly through the morning low tides
