Surf tourism nonprofit Waves For Development seeks coordinator

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 February, 2013 : - - Waves for Development, a surf tourism non-profit, is seeking a Social Entrepreneurship Coordinator for its base in Lobitos, Peru through a contest. This year-long opportunity will allow one dynamic individual to shape the lives of young Peruvians through business development skills.

When Lobitos resident Henry Espinoza was 15, a Waves volunteer taught him how to use a camera. Shortly after, a professional camera was made available for Henry to use and he quickly grew adept at taking photographs of surfers from the beach.

Waves volunteers mentored Henry in starting a business selling surf photography to visiting surf tourists. This created a steady income for Henry with portions of proceeds going to support himself and his family, save for college and reinvest in the opportunity with WAVES. Henry’s brothers are now involved in the program and are setting careers goals for themselves.

“It can be difficult for individuals from the first world to understand the impact a financial input can make to a person’s life in the majority of the world. A small increase in income can make huge differences in the lives of those at the bottom of the financial pyramid,” said Dave Aabo, WAVES Executive Director.

WAVES has created a contest format for individuals who wish to apply for the position.
