Burleigh Pro Enjoying Good Surf As Higher Seeds Apply The Power

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 6 February, 2013 : - - Burleigh Heads, Australia -- Good clean waves at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast for day four of the Breaka Burleigh Pro and the higher seeded surfers relished the conditions with powerful turns and solid scores throughout the day.

South Coast NSW surfer Nicholas Squiers won the opening heat of day. He left it to the last minute to secure the win with his final 7.33 scoring ride elevating him from 3rd to 1st place ahead of Brazilian Marco Fernandez who also advanced in 2nd place.

“Normally I like to start my heats with good scoring rides but that wasn’t the case today, I was behind most of the heat but fortunately found a good wave late and nailed it – the waves are good and if it can stay good I’m confident I can surf well here – we’ll see,” said Squiers after his heat.

Squiers will face Brazilian Luel Felipe and fellow Australian and World Ranked 19 surfer Kieren Perrow in round four tomorrow. Gold Coast Professional Lifeguard John Cummings is a regular in the line-up at Burleigh Heads and showed that local knowledge does count as he progressed through to round four in second place behind Jose Ferreira from Portugal.

Cummings is excited to join the top seeds in tomorrow’s round and believes his powerful surfing characteristics and knowledge of the break will serve him well in the forcast good conditions at Burleigh.

Sunshine Coast’s Jack Duggan continued his outstanding run-to-date by scoring a high scoring heat win over Ty Watson (AUS). Duggan’s heat score of 16.50 was the highest of the day and included an excellent 8.8 ride and if he can carry his form through to the top seeded round tomorrow he’ll be a good chance to keep progressing.

In his first ever ASP World Tour event Duggan’s wins through rounds one to three have been impressive and inclusive of excellent scores.

Newcastle’s Ryan Callinan showed he’s well and truly over his injuries that have disrupted his competitive development over the past 12 months by posting a confidence boosting win where he defeated Matt Lewis-Hewitt from New Zealand.

Callinan is excited to move into round four and looking forward to going up against former two-time world champion Mick Fanning. “I’m feeling 99% right and I’ll have to be 100% tomorrow coming up against Mick Fanning – I’m ready and I know I’ll have to be right on my game against a champion like Mick – It will be good.” International surfers were prominent today.

David Van Zyl from Durban in South Africa powered to a comfortable heat win as did Portugal pair Jose Ferreira and Frederico Morais and in the final heat of the day Hairil Anwar of Indonesia took a solid win.

After his win Van Zyl commented on the waves saying ” These are the best ASP World Tour event waves I’ve surfed in – they really offer a lot to work with and I’m definitely better suited in good conditions so I hope it stays good in the coming days.”

The top seeds join the event in the next round with Mick Fanning and Owen Wright as the top two seeds – Tomorrow is likely to see them in action and the final 12 girls are also a chance to run round 4 tomorrow with conditions expected to remain good.
