Beachley joins husband Kirk Pengilly as stamp figure
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 13 February, 2013 : - - A photo of world champion surfer Layne Beachley surfing has been made into a limited-edition stamp to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Surfing Australia. Australia Post released a series of four domestic base-rate (60c) stamps yesterday. The stamps show key aspects of surfing from the 1950s to today.
Beachley, who has earned seven world titles in the sport, was chosen on the back of Australia's domination of women's surfing in recent years. She yesterday described it as an "enormous honour". Beachley's husband, INXS member Kirk Pengilly, was also immortalised on a limited-edition stamp this year. A picture of one of the band's CD covers was featured in a stamp collection released on Australia Day.
"It's amazing to be featured on a stamp at the same time as my husband," Beachley said. "What are the chances of having two people in the same household being featured on a separate stamp at the same time? It's very cool."
