Gold Coast To Host Australia’s Best Boardriding Clubs
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 February, 2013 : - - Australia’s best boardriding clubs are heading to the Gold Coast from this Friday for the world’s largest inter-club surfing teams event, the Volcom Kirra Teams Challenge. This year the three-day event has attracted 36 teams of eight surfers each and will be held at either Kirra Point or Duranbah.
First held in the 1960s as the Kirra Pro Am, the format was changed in 1985 to a teams format to become Australia’s most prestigious boardriding title. The event was last held at Kirra in 1994. The defending champions are D-Bah Boardriders and event co-ordinator John Robin said the response from Australia’s boardriding community ensured another tight contest this weekend.
“We’ve got Newport Plus coming from Sydney for the first time in at least 10 years and again Margaret River is putting in the effort to come all the way over for it. We’ll continue to monitor the conditions for the best place to host the event and it looks like we’ll have some quality, clean conditions at the weekend.”
The event scores can be followed live through compusurf.com.au Competition starts at 8am (Qld time) on all three days and will conclude at 4pm on Friday and Saturday and 2.30pm on Sunday. Details on the venue confirmation can be directed to John Robin on 0402 816 514.
The Volcom Kirra Teams Challenge is proudly supported by Volcom, Gold Coast City Council, XXXX, Surfing Australia, the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre, Surfing Queensland, TV4Me, the Australian Government’s Illicit Drugs In Sport (IDIS) program, All State Partners, Rainbow Bay Surf Life Saving Club and Banana Wax.
