Surftech Shootout and Surf & Sand Duel SUP Race the Nation's Top SUP Surf/Race Combo Event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 February, 2013 : - - Many consider Santa Cruz, California the Wild West of the surfing world. In the past four years, the Surftech Shootout and Surf & Sand Duel SUP Race have certainly lived up to the Wild West moniker! Now the stage is set for the 5th Annual Surftech Shootout and 3rd Annual Surf & Sand Duel SUP Race. Many of the worlds best SUP surfers and racers will converge at Santa Cruz's infamous Steamer Lane March 22-24 to test their skill at the legendary point break.

Since winning the 2012 Shootout, Santa Barbara's Matt Becker has been on a bit of a tear, reaching the quarter finals of the Stand Up World Tour Sunset Beach event earlier this month and putting in memorable performances at Mavericks this winter.

"The Surftech Shootout is one of the events that I look forward to the most every year," said last year's champ. "It's the only event that combines an SUP surf event with a race. My ultimate goal is to win both the surf and race events combined! The last two year's I've been fortunate enough to win both, just not in the same year."

SURF & SAND DUEL SUP RACE
This is a great race to kick-off your 2013 race season! The Surf & Sand Duel SUP Race will feature a 2.7 mile (single lap) short course and a 6.2 mile (two lap) long course race. For the this year event organizers have added a prone paddle division in both the long and short course. The Men's and Women's "Elite" divisions are the 12'6" classes in the long course. There is also a short beach run at the end of the short course and in between laps of the long course.

What better way to spend your weekend than racing along the Boardwalk, wharf, cliffs and harbor of beautiful Santa Cruz, California!

NEW EVENT FOR 2013 - COWELL's SUP CLASSIC
A new addition for 2013, the Cowell's SUP Classic is a SUP surfing contest held at Cowell's Beach just down the point from Steamer Lane. The Cowell's SUP Classic is the perfect opportunity for entry level to intermediate level SUP surfers to try their hand at competition. Cowell's offers long lined up right handers (and some lefts) that break gently and peel for up to a half mile along the cliffs below West Cliff Drive.
