Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 February, 2013 : - - Event number three of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10, at Domes Beach, Rincon on decide the 2013 Men’s and Women’s Champions of the APSPR (Asociacion Profesional de Surfing de Puerto Rico) annual championship for the twelfth year.
The total Men's prize purse will be $25,000, while the Women competitors will share a total purse of $12,000. “Since 2001, Corona Extra has been the biggest supporter of Puerto Rican pro surfers”, said Werner Vega, APSPR President. “The $37,000 total purse means that we will be able to pay the winner of the Men a first prize of $10,000. The Women’s champion will receive $5,000”.
Currently leading the Men’s rankings for 2013 is Brian Toth, 27, of Isabela, who is a three-time champion of the APSPR Circuit. Toth is the most successful Puerto Rican surfer ever, having competed for several years on the international ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Tour, where he is currently ranked number 39. In second place is Alejandro Moreda, 27, of San Juan. All of the top nine surfers on the current APSPR ratings are from Puerto Rico. In equal tenth position are the two top-rated overseas competitors, Franscisco Bellorin, 22, of Venezuela, and Gabe Kling, 33, of Florida.
Bellorin won the first event of the season at Domes in February of 2012, and Kling won the last event at Middles Beach, in Isabela, in October. Both Bellorin and Kling are expected to compete in the Domes event, to contest the championship. Also competing will be Dylan Graves, 27, of Isabela, who recently placed fourth in the recent ASP contest just two weeks ago at Jobos Beach. Graves is currently ranked number 42 on the world ratings.
On the Womens side of the draw, the current ratings leader is Amy Nicholl, 23, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida who won the last event at Middles. In second place is Liza Caban, 19, of Aguadilla, who placed equal third in each of the previous two events. Also expected to compete is Quincy Davis, 18, of Montauk, New York, who won the Domes event in 2012 in a close heat over Maria Kuzmovich. Kuzmovich, 28, of Daytona Beach, Florida, who also splits her time between Florida and Puerto Rico, recently claimed a second place in the competition at Jobos.
“All competitors should have their entries in by Wednesday, February 27 to guarantee their slot. For surfing fans who attend the Domes event, there will be gala nighttime entertainment both Friday and Saturday night at many festive venues in the Rincon area.
“Surfing fans who are unable to attend in person at Domes will once again have the opportunity to follow the action online with the popular “Heats on Demand” feature”, said APSPR Event Coordinator, Vivianee Vega. At the completion of each day of competition they will have access to every scoring ride of the event.
Each scoring ride is shown, along with the points earned for that wave, through the technology of the Beach Byte computer scoring system. Each of the five judges enters their scores for each surfer’s rides into the computer, which tallies the points and decides the winners. All of that scoring information is then available on the APSPR website to anyone with access to a modem.
