Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve To Be Declared in March

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 February, 2013 : - - Victoria’s first National Surfing Reserve on Phillip Island will be formally declared at a ceremony to be held on Saturday, 16 March 2013 at Cape Woolamai Beach at 10.30am and everyone is invited. The Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve, made up of four sites along Phillip Island’s coast: Cape Woolamai, Smiths Beach, Summerland and Cat Bay, will be opened by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change and Youth Affairs, The Hon Ryan Smith MP, at a ceremony hosted by surfing legend Layne Beachley.

Phillip Island and Australia’s ‘who’s who’ of surfing will attend the launch that is the result of over 18 months of hard work by a community group with representatives from Phillip Island’s surfing and surf life saving community. Chairman and Founder of National Surfing Reserves (NSR) Brad Farmer, along with star surfers Glyndyn Ringrose and Nikki Van Dijk will support proceedings which coincide with Phillip Island Board Riders Club 50th anniversary celebrations.

“This is a great honour and tribute to the history and quality of surfing on Phillip Island,” says Geoff Owens from Phillip Island Board Riders Club and long-term Island surfer. The Reserve declaration coincides with the Club’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve will be the first of its kind in Victoria and one of only 25 across Australia. The philosophy of National Surfing Reserves (NSR) is to ‘care, share and preserve’. National Surfing Reserves is a voluntary collaboration dedicated to recognising iconic surfing sites in Australia and assisting NSR sites globally. Self funded and non-political, the National Reference Group comprises experienced individuals from across Australia to facilitate NSR nominations and management processes.

The Phillip Island National Surfing Reserve community project is proudly supported by San Remo District Financial Services, Ramada Phillip Island, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Bass Coast Shire Council, Phillip Island Board Riders Club and Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club.
