Surfing Australia Green Room Conference Puts Spotlight On High Performance Coaching
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 February, 2013 : - - Australia’s leading surfing coaches and administrators met on the Gold Coast yesterday for the fourth Green Room Conference hosted by Surfing Australia. The conference is the benchmark professional development gathering for the surfing community held at the Twin Towns Services club and coincides with the Quiksilver Pro and Roxy Pro, which start at Snapper Rocks on the southern end of the Gold Coast this weekend.
The conference attracted more than 100 participants who heard from high profile presenters including legendary swimming coach Laurie Lawrence and leadership expert Avril Henry.
Other speakers included 1976 surfing World Champion Peter Townend, skill acquisition expert Professor Damian Farrow, leading dietician and sports physiologist Dr Gary Slater, Surfing Australia Sport Science Manager and Head of Strength and Conditioning Dr Jeremy Sheppard and a panel discussion chaired by 1978 surfing World Champion Wayne Bartholomew with three top ASP judges including Richie Porta, Dave Shipley and Pritamo Ahrendt.
MC for the conference was 1988 surfing World Champion Barton Lynch. “It was really great to see such a broad cross section of the surfing community attending the Green Room Conference this year,” said Chris Symington, Surfing Australia General Manager High Performance & Sports Development.
“We are continually trying to find exciting and relevant speakers and we were really happy with the messages delivered today, particularly by our keynote speakers. Laurie Lawrence was energetic and engaging as you would expect, then you also had Avril Henry who gave participants a lot to think about when it came to leadership and cross generational relationships.
“We felt like we achieved a great balance of presenters today and we hope the attendees took away some key learnings that they can put into practice in their own environments.”
The Surfing Australia Green Room Conference was proudly supported by the Australian Sports Commission, the Federal Government’s Illicit Drugs in Sport program, Hurley, Connecting Southern Gold Coast, Bleach* Surfing The Fringe festival, Suncorp, Nikon, FCS and TravelSIM.
