Dorrington draws Parkinson while Stoyle will face Gilmore
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 March, 2013 : - - Queensland surfing pair Brent Dorrington (Gold Coast) and Dimity Stoyle (Sunshine Coast) both secured coveted berths in the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro’s presented by Land Rover by winning their respective Moskova Trials events today at Rainbow Bay.
Twenty-six year-old Dorrington will now draw reigning World Champion Joel Parkinson, 31, (Aus) and Matt Wilksinson (Aus) in round one of the ASP World Championship Tour event which could commence as early as tomorrow.
The, underground legend proved he will be no easy task at his local break dominating today’s final from start to finish in the punchy one waves of Rainbow Bay. The stylish natural-footer opened quickly with an 8.50 and then backed up with an 8.90 to never be headed. Runner-up Matt Banting (Port Macquarie, NSW) was left requiring an 8.90 score on the siren.
Dorrington who will now be competing in his first ever World Championship Tour event said winning the final was a dream come true.
Sunshine Coast surfer Stoyle continued her sensational run with today’s result. Fresh from victory in Newcastle and a runner-up placing at Burleigh Heads Stoyle was forced to fight off an inform Nikki Van Dijk (Phillip Island, Vic) The 21 –year-old came from behind with an 8.65 to snatch victory from Van Dijk and will now go up against five- time world champion Stephanie Gilmore (Aus) and Sage Erikson (USA) in round one.
Twelve year-old surfer Alyssa Lock (AUS) was eliminated from her opening, heat of the Roxy Pro Trials today. The events youngest-ever competitor still managed to impress all with a solid performance in the punchy one-metre waves of Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast.
The future star finished with a two wave tally of 11.40 (out of a possible 20) that included a 6.40 score. The local Snapper Rocks surfer came out with a positive attitude after overcoming a nervous start and said the experience was a big learning curve.
Stoyle dominated the heat to finish with a 14.60 heat total and advance with a win. The 22 year-old is competing with renewed confidence after winning the recent Newcastle event.
Officials will access conditions at 7am (AEST) tomorrow morning for a possible start of either round one of the Quiksilver or Roxy Pro’s presented by Land Rover.
