Great surf predicted for Corona Extra Pro in Puerto Rico this weekend
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 March, 2013 : - - Big north swells have Caribbean surf fans excited about the prospects for high quality conditions this weekend at Domes Beach, in Rincon, on the northwest corner of the island. A massive cold front on the mainland is causing freezing temperatures as far south as Florida, which always means a big north swell for Puerto Rico. This phenomenon has given the island the nickname of “the Hawaii of the Atlantic”. Since 1968 the World’s best surfers have met here for international competition, when the World Surfing Championships were contested at the same Domes Beach, and were won that year by Hawaiian surfer Fred Hemmings.
“We have had a fantastic winter of surf this year”, said APSPR Judge Liz Hauser. “The swells have been big, with offshore winds and beautiful conditions”.
The Domes contest will be event number three of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit .The $ 37,000 event will be held Saturday and Sunday, March 9 & 10. The Corona Contest will be the third of three events which will decide the Men’s and Women’s Champions of the APSPR (Asociacion de Profesional Surfing de Puerto Rico) annual championship for the 2012 – 2013 season. The total Men's prize purse this weekend will be $25,000, while the Women competitors will share a total purse of $12,000.
Werner Vega, President of APSPR announced that Corona Extra has once again partnered with several other sponsors to continue the premier pro surf circuit of the Caribbean.
“Since 2001, Corona Extra has been the biggest supporter of Puerto Rican pro surfers” said Mr. Vega. The continued support of Corona Extra shows a huge commitment to the sport and it’s athletes. The $37,000 total purse means that we will be able to pay the winner of the Men a first prize of $10,000. The Women’s champion will receive $5,000”. A field of 60 or more contestants is expected that will include competitors from the Mainland East Coast, California and Venezuela.
The Domes contest is the third and final event of the year for the APSPR competition, which will decide the season champions. Currently leading the Men’s rankings for 2012 -13 is Brian Toth, 27, of Isabela, who is already a three-time champion of the APSPR Circuit. Toth is the most successful Puerto Rican surfer ever, having competed for several years on the international ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Tour. In second place is Alejandro Moreda, 27, of San Juan.
All of the top nine surfers on the current APSPR ratings are from Puerto Rico. In equal tenth position are the two top-rated overseas competitors, Franscisco Bellorin, 22, of Venezuela, and Gabe Kling, 33, of Florida. Bellorin won the first event of the season at Domes in February of 2012, and Kling won the last event at Middles Beach, in Isabela, in October. Both Bellorin and Kling are expected to compete in the Domes event, to contest the championship.
On the Women’s side of the draw, the current ratings leader is Amy Nicholl, 23, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida who won the last event at Middles. Nicholl loves to compete in Puerto Rico where she won both APSPR Women’s events in 2011, at Middles and Domes. In second place will be Maria Kuzmovich, 28, of Daytona Beach, Florida, who splits her time between Florida and Puerto Rico.
Kuzmovich recently claimed a second place in the competition at Middles. Also expected to compete is Quincy Davis, 18, of Montauk, New York, who won the last Domes event in 2012, in a close heat over Kuzmovich. Amy Nicholl’s recent dominance in the APSPR Women’s Title race has left local surfers Maria Del Mar Gonzalez, Idalis Alvarado and Natalie Perez struggling to catch her. All those talented local girls are expected to compete this weekend at Domes, where they will be attempting to give Nicholl, Davis and Kuzmovich a taste of “local knowledge”.
For surfing fans who attend the Middles event, there will be gala nighttime entertainment both Friday and Saturday night at many festive venues in the Rincon area.
“Surfing fans who are unable to attend in person at Domes will once again have the opportunity to follow the action online with the popular “Heats on Demand” feature”, said APSPR Event Coordinator, Viviannee Vega. At the completion of each day of competition they will have access to every scoring ride of the event.
On our website you can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to view and much more. Each scoring ride is shown, along with the points earned for that wave, through the technology of the Beach Byte computer scoring system. Each of the five judges enters their scores for each surfer’s rides into the computer, which tallies the points and decides the winners. All of that scoring information is then available on the APSPR website to anyone with access to a modem.
Corona Extra, and APSPR invite all the fans on the island to enjoy the best of surfing action coming this week to Domes Beach. The other generous sponsors of the Corona Extra Pro Circuit are: Jose Cuervo, Wapa TV, Primera Hora, Mundo Rad, Alfa Rock, El Nuevo Día, N-Punto, Hang Loose Surf Shop, and Werner Vega Surfboards
