Day 2 turns on for Australian Longboard Open

Australian Longboard Surfing Open
ASP 3 Star LQS event
Kingscliff, New South Wales
20 - 24 March 2013
Waves turn on for SUP & noserider divisions at Australian Longboard Open
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 March, 2013 : - - Day 2 of the Australian Longboard Surfing Open was completed in beautiful clean 2-3ft waves at the main break at Kingscliff. The focus shifted from the high pressures and wave riding wizardry of the LQS today with the spotlight turning to the amateur and pro SUP divisions as well as the style masters in the Mohawk Noserider division.
The Noserider event is unique with surfers only scoring points while they are up and riding on the nose with judges rewarding speed, critical control and style while -up on the nose. Round 1 of the Noserider was highly entertaining featuring the highest scores across the board for the whole tournament so far.
Local Coolangatta surfer Dane Pioli (AUS) kicked off the day’s proceedings in a big way scoring the highest single wave score of the day on the way to an important heat win to reach the semis over Australian pair Tony Silvagni and Matt Aldridge.
“The waves are so much better than yesterday out there. You can find some really long, hollow sections that are just perfect to get up onto that nose,” said Pioli. With the kind of poses on the nose that magazines will be clamouring over for a cover shot, Pioli never looked in doubt.
“It’s all about style when your up on the nose, with myself I like to just get up there and stand straight looking a bit more casual but if you’ve got the tricks there’s a lot of variations you can do up there.”

Another competitor taking advantage of surfing without the pressures of qualifying points was Jared Neal (Coffs Harbour, NSW) who looked at ease clocking in the second highest heat score of the day with a 16.50 (out of a possible 20).
“Of course we’ve got an amazing field of talent including the former world champion (Harley Ingleby) but for me the noserider is more about having a bit of fun and cheering on your mates,” reflected Neal.
2009 ASP Longboard World Champion Harley Ingleby (Emerald Beach, NSW) was also a standout winning his heat with the highest heat score of the day scoring a 16.80 (out of a possible 20).
2012 Australian SUP men’s champion, Beau Nixon (AUS), overcame some drama during the first incredibly stacked heat of the SUP Pro division to win his way through to the final. Nixon overcame a broken fin in his heat to beat 2012 Australian runner-up and 2012 4th placed surfers Jackson Close (AUS) and Geoff Breen (AUS) in their semi final bout.
“Yeah my fin just fell out, I’ve been having a few difficulties with the boxes in my fins lately and hopefully I can get that sorted before the final,” said Nixon. With the exception of Marty Cole (AUS) the first semi featured three of the four surfers in the Australian Championship finals in Port Macquarie last year.
“It was good to have Geoff and Jackson out there again, those boys always kill it but we were all just frothing out there before the heat because the waves were so good!”
