Industry Updates
Roxy Dare Yourself Weekend runs at Kuta Beach and the Beachwalk Mall in Bali
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 March, 2013 : - - During the weekend of March 16th and 17th as part of the new Roxy Dare Yourself global social media program, Roxy Indonesia invited aspiring Roxy girls down to the beachwalk, Bali on Saturday for a photo booth session complete with nail painting, make up, and their pick of great Roxy fashions to model, and then to Kuta Beach on Sunday for a morning of surf lessons and fun in the sun.
More than 40 girls showed up to the beachwalk, Bali on Saturday afternoon and evening in front of the Quiksilver and Roxy store to have their photos taken and enter the Roxy Dare Yourself program. They got to choose their favorite Roxy outfit, get professional make up and nail art courtesy of Etude House Indonesia, and then pose in front of the camera to show off their best Roxy girl style.
Each girl went home with a Roxy and Etude goody bag worth Rp 500k, as well as the chance to be one of the 5 young women that will be chosen as the “Dare Yourself” winners for 2013. Those 5 lucky Roxy girls will embark on the adventure of a lifetime, which includes an epic trip together with Roxy’s top pro female athletes, up to $5,000 USD in cash, and a Roxy clothing package.
And exclusively for the SEA region, the top 5 Roxy girl candidates (including one from Indonesia) will enjoy a 3-day Roxy Experience to Bali, where they will have the opportunity to surf, skate, and extreme sport adventure around the island as well as sightsee and enjoy the culture on the Island of the Gods.
The submission phase ends on March 28 at 11:59pm, so there is still time to enter for your chance to live the dream of a Roxy Girl!
24 year old Sheila Pratama got an invite via the Roxy Facebook page and thought it looked like fun, so came by the beachwalk to check it out. “I’m from Jakarta but am working in Bali now,” she said, “and after reading about the Roxy Dare Yourself competition I decided to come down and join in. I even got interested enough to signed up for the surfing lessons, which for a born and raised Jakarta girl was a bit out of my league. But it was a great experience!”
The Roxy Dare Yourself Surf Day was originally scheduled for Saturday morning but was rained out, so had to be re-scheduled for Sunday morning, which turned out to be perfect as Sunday was bright and sunny with warm water and great waves.
29 girls participated in the morning’s surf lesson session, which started around 9 am and lasted until just after noon. The group included Roxy shop girls, girls that signed up the day before at the beachwalk photo shoot, and girls that had signed up via the Roxy Facebook page.
The crew from Bali Learn to Surf did a great job of taking the girls through each step, starting off with stretching, then practicing standing up before taking them out into the bright blue-green water.
And though not all of them were successful at standing up and getting the ride of their life, they all have a much better appreciation of surfing and what it takes to get up and ride a wave.
One of the best performances of the morning was turned in by Asela “Cella” Jizasti, 24 years old, who hails from Malang in East Java but now calls Bali home. On her very first wave she popped up and rode all the way in to the beach, just like she had been doing it all her life.
When she was asked later how she made it look so easy, she admitted to some prior experience saying, “A long time ago I had tried basic surfing, but not a lot, so this time I thought it would be really hard to stand up on the board again. But I got my balance pretty easy and it was great fun. Thanks Roxy for getting me surfing again, and I want to keep doing it now.”
All the girls got to take their Roxy rashshirts and boardshorts home (a Rp 750k value), and we hope we’ll see them back on the beach and surfing the Kuta Beach waves again next weekend!
The Roxy Dare Yourself Weekend was sponsored by Roxy, Bali Learn to Surf, beachwalk Bali, Etude House Indonesia, Nylon magazine, and Gogirl! Magazine.
