Shells Café in Strandhill enjoys successful cookbook

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 April, 2013 : - - A tiny seaside café in a remote corner of Ireland has hit the big time after the runaway success of a surf-inspired cookbook featuring its recipes. Jane and Myles Lamberth opened Shells Café in the village of Strandhill in 2010 and subsequently compiled a book of their favourite recipes. The book has since been a runaway success on both sides of the Atlantic, and the authors are set to appear on a prime time TV show, James Nesbitt’s Ireland, to be broadcast on ITV1 on Monday 22 April.

Jane and Myles are featured at length in the programme which focusses on the Strandhill area of northwest Ireland. The couple explain how their twin passions of cookery and surfing led them to open Shells, and how the café quickly developed a name as a flourishing eatery.

“The idea behind the programme is to tell the story of different places in Ireland through the people who live here,” says Jane. “They selected us as a couple who have a beachside café on the west coast and the section is about our lives, and how we run the café. It all ties in very nicely with the book, and it will definitely put a spotlight on this area of Ireland.”

“They filmed us doing all the obvious things like cooking and sourcing ingredients, and they also filmed us skateboarding to work and going surfing on our day off...it was a lot of fun!”

The Surf Café Cookbook, published last summer, has been a runaway success, recieving glowing reviews in magazines and newspapers as far away as California, Australia and South Africa. The book sold thousands of copies in the UK and Ireland within weeks of its release, and now it looks as though it will repeat that success in the States with large orders coming in from bookshops and hip boutique chains like Anthropologie.

Recipes in the book include Clonakilty Black Pudding And Crispy Bacon Breakfast Salad, Guinness And Beef Stew, Vegetable Gratin With Durrus Cheese, West Coast Chowder, Thai Pumpkin Broth, Surfer’s Salad, Sardine Bruschetta, Apple And Donegal Rapeseed Oil Cake, and Irish Whiskey Pudding.
