Finalists crowned at the 2013 Ohana NSW Junior State Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 July, 2013 : - - Day seven of the 2013 Ohana NSW State Surfing Titles saw finalists crowned in three-to-four foot Maroubra beach peaks. Cedar Leigh Jones managed to snatch the win in the Under-12 Girls finals. The Avalon natural-footer threw down a variety of backside snaps to be crowned NSW champion. Despite locking in an impressive eight-point ride, Leilani Smith had to settle for second place.

Narrabeen’s Jamie Thompson took the win in the Under-12 Boys final. In a heat where the lead pinballed back and forth between Lennox Chell, Zayne Olsson and Jamie, all the aforementioned surfers managed to hold the top spot at one point over the course of the 20-minute final. However, when the final hooter rang it was Jamie who claimed first with Zayne in second, Lennox in third and Ethan Stock in fourth.

Central Coast surfers Kirra-Belle Olsson and Macy Callaghan took first and second respectively in the final of the Under-14 Girls. Olsson was able to perform a handful of solid forehand turns on long lefts to lock in a heat total of 16.44. Alyssa Lock finished in third with Bodhi Leigh-Jones in fourth.

“I just wanted to get on any good wave that rolled through," said Kirra after her heat. "The medium sized waves looked the best; the bigger ones closed out a lot and the small ones didn’t have all that much power. Macy is my best friend so it’s a good feeling to have her come second.”

In another victory for the Central Coast, Macmasters Beach surfer Mitch Raymond took the win in the Under-14 Boys final. On his first wave the goofy-footer locked in a near perfect 9.83, which gave him an edge over the fellow finalists. Fellow Central Coast surfers Sandon Whittaker and Caleb Tancred finished in second and third respectively, with Mikey McDonagh in fourth.

“It’s such a good feeling to be NSW champion,” said Mitch. “I just went out and tried to surf like I do in a freesurf. All the other finalists were surfing so good all event, so it was good to take the win.”

Billie Melinz fought a valiant battle in the Under-16 Girls final, locking in 8.17 and a 6.5. The Coalcliff natural-footer smacked out several powerful turns to take the victory ahead of Alysse Cooper, Paris Whittaker and Rubie Reents. Curl Curl’s Harley Ross-Webster backed up his previous standout heats with an awesome performance in the Under-16 Boys final. Harley locked in a pair of 8.67 rides to take the win ahead of Cronulla’s Nathan Martin.

“I was pretty happy when I saw the north-east wind come up. I’m pretty used to these sort of conditions at home,” said Harley. “I’ve been surfing in a lot of heats with friends, so I’ve just been enjoying myself and have been happy to be with them. I’m pretty stoked to get the win and qualify for Aussies.”

Holly Wawn took down an in-form Ashlee Spence and Cali McDonagh to claim the 2013 NSW State Title in the Under-18 Girls. The powerful Newport surfer locked in a heat total of 15.93 for a variety of vertical turns and technical cutbacks.

“It was definitely a nerve-wracking heat, especially when I saw Ashlee catch her last wave,” said Holly. “I tried to pick off those inside lefts as early as I could and it seemed to work, my second wave ended up being my best score. I’m really looking forward to Aussies now.”

In one of the event’s most anticipated heats, the Under-18 boys, local surfer Monty Tait took down overall event standout Mikey Wright. With the hometown crowd behind him, the Maroubra natural-footer threw down a wide variety of forehand turns to take the win.

“Wow, I can’t talk really, it’s the first event I’ve ever won,” said an ecstatic Monty after his heat. “All the local guys took a lot of time out of their day to come down and support me and I just can’t believe it. I saw Mikey do a massive air and get a 9.5, but I just stuck with my gameplan and it all paid off. I’m so happy.”
