Gary Elkerton & Frederico Piluruzu blast the Expression session

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 June 2004: - - The top 40 Italian surfers, the 3x World Masters Champion Gary Elkerton and the Italian pride Federico Pilurzu, wrote last weekend at Buggerru (south west coast of Sardinia island) a new, important page of the young Italian surfing history. After 20 days of waiting, a nice swell from northwest hit the west coast of the biggest island in the whole Mediterranean. Perfect 5 feet left hander waves were pumping for the morning then to the final, when the conditions improved again, with no wind and glassy barrels!

Roman surfer Paolo DiAngelo, Italian champion in 2002, won the 25 minutes man on man final defeating Quiksilver team rider Manuel Maffei, who performed the most radical surf throughout the contest. "This has probably been the best contest ever in Italy" said Paolo DiAngelo with an air ticket offered by Emirates on one hand and a Quiksilver cheque on the other.

The cherry on the top of the cake was represented by the 40 minutes Expression Session: Gary and Federico had the contest area all for themselves. All the surfers and the best Italian surfing photographers and cameramen, were on the cliff to see the hot manoeuvres of the two. One super vertical back hand Off the lip from Gary and a grabbed aerial 180° of Federico were just 2 of the many hot moves seen by the public. Gary was very disappointed to leave Buggerru with such nice surf, but he guaranteed us that he will be back, next year.

The Roxy Sardinia Surf Invitational was won by the Italian-Argentinian Maria Laura Temporini, who survived a heavy collision with another Italian surfer-girl who didn´t respect the priority. Marco Puggioni, the vice mayor of the small town of Buggerru, at the prize ceremony said: "Today everything was here in Buggerru: the best surfers, the sun, the waves. I thank Quiksilver to give us the chance to show all Italian surfers the warmth and hospitality of the people from Buggerru and the Sulcis area".
