MAZ QUINN SECURES BEST RESULT IN TWO YEARS ON WQS
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 April, 2005 : - - Overnight (Sunday), New Zealand’s number one surfer Maz Quinn placed fourth at the 4 star Vendee Pro held at La Sauzaie, Bretignolles, France. The fourth is Quinn’s first finals berth in two years on the World Qualifying Series (WQS) after he competed on the elite World Championship Tour (WCT) in 2002. Quinn pockets $2,400 USD and an all important 1005 rating points in a bid to requalify for the 2006 WCT. The result will boost Quinn some 50 places up the ratings to around 40th – 50th (Official ratings were not released at the time of press release). Quinn placed fourth behind Eric Rebiere, 15.00 (Fra), Jamie Thomson, 9.84 (Aus) and Jarrad Sullivan, 7.64 (Aus).
“Flying to France for a single event is a big ask” explained Quinn by phone this morning “but this fourth place has made it well worth it” as he sat in his hotel room packing his bags for an early flight out of France to USA tomorrow morning (French time). Quinn competes in the Body Glove Surfabout (4 star) at Lower Trestles this week alongside brother Jay.
Quinn lamented his finals performance saying that he had an absolute “shocker” scoring 7.63 in the final but in saying so was more than happy with the overall result. “Conditions were tricky at about 1.5m – 2.0m swells with an onshore wind. The surf break is a kind of rock outcrop that produces good left and right hand waves but can be tricky at times. “I surfed some good heats through the comp including a 13.67 total heat score in round four to get things under way and then won my semifinal.” “The surf was sick on the second last day, solid 6ft waves and good conditions”.
Quinn’s best results on the WQS have often come from competing in France. Quinn was in France when he first secured enough points to compete on the WCT and the country has also been location of his biggest ever win on the WQS back in 2000.
