ASP 1 Star WQSeries Event for Men & Women Cave Rock, The Bluff , Durban 26 June - 1 July 2005
Umhlanga Rocks Surfer to be tested at Cave Rock
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 June, 2005 : - - Northwood High School teenager Chris Leppan (15) of Umhlanga Rocks will be diving into the deep end when he enters his first WQS senior surfing event The Rusty Cave Rock Classic presented by KFC at Cave Rock on the 26 June.
All though still young to the sport of surfing he has in a short career notched up some impressive results and it is only a matter of time before he starts taking titles. He has represented KZN since 2005 and has placed favourable in many junior competitions around the country. He is also a first team member for surfing at Northwood High School.
The spirited teenager and Rusty Junior team rider comments, “Cave Rock is a great hard fast wave, very short ride but extremely hollow and powerful. It is a wave that can completely "barrel" you. I am very excited about surfing my first WQS event. “I hope to do well in all the local contests. I also have my eye on the international events. I am looking forward to the Rusty Cave Rock Classic presented by KFC. My Short term goal is striving to join the ASP Pro Tour and become one of the top seeds.
It will be a baptism of fire for this youngster as he will have his work cut out in this senior division which will will be headed by fellow Rusty team riders Mike Varikas and Noel Rahme of Durban. With the likes of Matthew Kruger, SA Champion Shane Thorne, Warwick Wright of Durban and Bluff Locals , Richard Sills, Shane Warren and Father and Son combination Rudy Palmboom Snr and Jnr to name a few the door is open for an excellent showcase of pure surfing.
A great international contingent has entered this event with riders from Australia, USA, Hawaii and Brazil being represented. Ex Durbanite Shaun Gossman leads the Australian charge with his compatriots Luke Cheadle, Corey Ziems and Rique Smith. They will no doubt try to form some dominance in this competition.
Three of the six days set aside are needed to complete the event and the Contest Director, ASP Africa Operations Manager Colin Fitch, will give the go ahead based on the conditions for the day.
The Rusty Cave Rock Classic takes place from 26 June to 1 July and is presented by KFC and co-sponsored by Bokomo UP and Go, Nestle Pure Life and Bavaria Beer. This event forms part of the Durban Africa’s Winter festival of events.
