WORLD CHAMPION SURFER SOFIA MULANOVICH IS NOMINATED FOR THE 2005 ESPY BEST FEMALE ACTION SPORTS ATHLETE AWARD

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 June, 2005 : - - Los Angeles, California – June 27, 2005 – Current World Champion of Professional Women’s Surfing, Peruvian, Sofia Mulanovich has been nominated for a 2005 ESPY Award in the category of Best Female Action Sports Athlete.

Mulanovich is the first South American to ever achieve such coveted success in the world of professional surfing. In 2004 Mulanovich blew the minds of surfing professionals and spectators alike when she began her winning streak first at the International Surfing Association (ISA) world competition in Salinas, Ecuador, claiming first place. Her first place finish helped propel Team Peru to a fourth place finish; the highest placing Peru has achieved at the world games. Mulanovich then went on to win three consecutive World Championship Tournament (WCT) events placing her in World Title contention at the mere age of 21. With her childhood dream within reach Mulanovich finished off her second year on the elite WCT tour with a world title in Haleiwa, Hawaii at the Roxy Pro.

Since winning her first world title, Mulanovich has been presented the elite Laurel’s Sport Award by President Toledo of Peru and her name has been placed on the outside of the National Stadium in Lima, Peru. Mulanovich is a South American heroine and icon; a documentary about her achievements and wide spread inspiration will be released globally in early 2006.

“I am honored to be nominated for such a prestigious award, in the company of such great athletes,” stated Mulanovich. “Never in a million years did I think surfing would bring me such attention or awards, I surf because I love it, all of this is just amazing to me, thank you everyone,” exclaimed the adorable Peruvian.

Mulanovich has continued her champion form with three wins in 2005 on the WCT with her eyes on a second world title. Mulanovich currently sits in the first place position on the 2005 WCT rankings.

The ESPY Awards were created by ESPN in 1993 and are presented for excellence in sports performance each year. The 2005 ESPY Awards will be held on July 13th at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California and will be hosted by Matthew Perry. The star-studded event will air on ESPN on Sunday July 17th at 9:00 PM.
