MUNDAKA IS DEAD? (July 8, 2005) One of the world’s best left-hand sandbars has mysteriously vanished. Will the sand return?
The winter of 2004/2005 was as strange along the farthest recesses of the Bay of Biscay as it was weird in California. But in Spain the problem wasn’t so much too much rain as it was lack of swell. Beginning in January, the fabled left-hand sandbar which breaks along the river mouth at Mundaka began to suck -- from lack of swell, but also from another phenomenon that no one there had ever seen. As winter faded to spring, local Spanish surfers and disappointed travelers were left standing along the atalaya overlooking the left sandbar at Mundaka scratching their heads: “Where’s the beach?”
Mysteriously and tragically, the sandbar that created one of the best sand-bottom lefthanders in the world had just disappeared.
Some say the disappearing sandbar was caused by the dredging of a channel at a shipyard four kilometers from Mundaka. The local Basque government is taking the situation seriously, understanding the importance of Mundaka and surf tourism to Spain’s global reputation and the local economy. “We live from tourism,” hotel worker Maria Rosario Alkorta was quoted in a short news piece on the Internet. “In the summer more than 10,000 surfers gather here. If they don't come we'll run into difficulties.”
Craig Sage was quoted in the same Internet piece: “Surfing tourism is essential for this place, but there is something more. Mundaka is the symbol for surfing in Europe. If we lose it, it will be like losing part of our soul.”
If Sherlock Holmes surfed, he would be all over this: The Case of the Disappeared Sandbar. A nullified Mundaka is not a good thing for the local or the global surf scene. It’s as if all of a sudden, over the course of four months, Malibu just stopped breaking, or the Superbank went kaput. The mystery has yet to be solved and the future of Mundaka is still in doubt.

Calendar submitted by BSA BRAZIL BORE BEATS ENGLISH RECORD TO ENTER THE GUINNESS BOOK
Paraná-born Serginho Laus reached unbelievable 10.1 km surfing non-stop the same bore wave, beating the English record of 9.1 km registered in the book of records
On June 24th, Friday, Paraná-born Serginho Laus achieved an unbelievable record of 10,1 km surfing non-stop the feared meeting of waters, known as bore, conquering the new world record on a tidal wave, that until then belonged to Englishman David Lawson, with 9.1 km on River Severn, registered in the Guinness Book of Records.
On the mouth of Araguari River in the Brazilian state of Amapá, Laus and his team observed the spring of the bore, reaching for the first time a site never before explored for surfing. "The attitude of exploring the origin of one of the most frightening bores in Brazil and in the world was fundamental. The mud banks along the riverside changed, and the only place for a potential breaking of the record was on the mouth of the river, to the ocean side,” said Serginho Laus, who spent 33 minutes and 15 seconds surfing the bore.
It was very difficult, on the third and last try I had to make a decision to forget all the pressure, the risks of the wave, the violence the phenomenon shows and keep the integration with nature, to keep control and concentration in moments I thought I wouldn't be able to surf so many kilometers” one of the greatest specialists in the bore phenomenon concluded, thrilled.
In a "voadeira", a fast regional boat, Laus counted on his team: the photographer Henrique Martin, cameraman Vinicius Sguarezi, pilot Zeca and Noelio Sobrinho, President of Brazilian Association of Bore Surfing, that guided Laus to breaking the record. Also present - Antonio Barbosa "Maninho", President of the Paraná Surf Federation, Luiz Fernando Pedroso, Director of Ediouro Publicações, and surfer Ana Carolina Passaro, that took part on the expedition as witnesses to the event.
With GPS (Geographic Position System) technology, precise equipment that offer geographic positions and navigation data, the Surfing in the Jungle team, with the Brazilian Guinness Book representative, Director of Ediouro Publicações Luiz Fernando Pedroso, took care of measuring and registering the record according to the bureaucratic rules established by the book of records.
"It’s a pleasure being able to register the breaking of a record in Amazonia, in such an impressive phenomenon as the bore. Now Serginho Laus is taking not only his name to the world's bestseller, but also the state of Amapá and the green and yellow of Brazil" said Luiz Fernando Pedroso, director of Ediouro Publicações, which distributes and represents Guinness Book in Brazil.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC FEDOSURF AND SURFING RECOGNIZED BY THE DOMINCAN REPUBLIC NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE
(July 8, 2005) The International Surfing Association (ISA) wishes to congratulate the Federacion Dominicana de Surf (FedoSurf) on having achieved official recognized sport status with the Dominican Republic Olympic Committee (DOM).
Members of Fedosurf appeared before the Dominican Republic Olympic Committee Extraordinary Assembly on the 7th of July with a petition for recognition. With great satisfaction to Fedosurf, the request was approved. The National Governing Body of surfing in the Dominican Republic, and ISA member since 1992, now holds full voting capacity member status with the COD in the name of surfing.
Fedosurf President, Néstor Puente, shared the news with ISA Executive Committee members commenting "The announcement fills us with satisfaction. In closing one circle in the achievement of this goal, we open a new harmonious circle between the ISA, PASA and Fedosurf to broaden the reach of surfing and to enrich the sport".
On receiving the news, ISA Vice President Maile Aguerre stated "With this recognition, we are all closer to a better future for all surfers, all over the world".
The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish-speaking nation has surfing on both coasts, primarily in the winter season.
The International Surfing Association (ISA) has been working for a better surfing future since it was founded in 1976. For almost 30 years, the ISA has guided the growth of the sport, expanding membership to over fifty National Federation nations and bringing surfing to new places. In March 1995 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) originally recognized the International Surfing Association (ISA) as the worldwide governing authority for surfing and all other waveriding sports.
IRELAND SALTROCK CO SLIGO OPEN –
(July 28, 2005) Saltrock and Strandhill, Co. Sligo are reunited this coming weekend the 30-31st July for an epic Irish session as the best of Ireland's accomplished surfers descend on the legendary break for this year's Saltrock Co. Sligo Open.
The perfect conditions last July were mastered by Saltrock rider Cain Kilcullen for the Open and Junior heats but gladiators Mike Morgan, Stephen Kilfeather and John McCarthy are storming to make it their own this year. 2004's competition saw the spectacular comeback of Andrew Hill to competitive surfing who after a long absence, had knocked out some of Ireland's top young surfers to progress to the Open final.
Easkey Britton took a clear first in the Women's final last year with the other three finalists closely tied. Shauna Ward finished 2nd, Aine O'Donnell, 3rd and Nicole Morgan, who scopped the women's title at the Lusty Glaze event last weekend, finished 4th.
Saltrock are only too proud to be involved as main sponsors for the weekend. Having sponsored events in Ireland since the late 80's including the sponsorship of the World Championships at Bundorran in the mid 90's, Saltrock's affinity with Ireland is part of a long-term commitment the company has towards the evolution of the country's surf industry and it's surfers. Martin Peirce Saltrock Marketing Manager adds: "Every year we're blown away by the enthusiastic spirit of the spectators and athletes alike. The atmosphere at Strandhill will not disappoint; the Irish certainly know how to surf hard and celebrate a good competition. It's important to Saltrock that we continue to show our support to the ISA and the growing number of talented individuals coming out of Ireland".
Irish Surfing Association Organised, the competition surrounds the National Team selection process, with competitors also surfing for a place in the squad. As well as the men's Open, the events include a Women's Open, longboard and bodyboard event and an Under 18's surf category.
The Saltrock Co Sligo Open will kick off at Strandhill with entries being taken at 10am on Saturday morning (30th July) and heats starting as soon as possible afterwards. Entry fee will be €10 for first entry, €5 for second or more entries. The event will include Open, Women, Longboard, Bodyboard, U18 divisions.
RONAN OERTZEN TO REPRESENT IRELAND AT INTER CELTIC WATERSPORTS GAMES
(July 27, 2005) Belfast Grommet Ronan Oertzen will be representing Ireland when he competes at Inter Celtic Water Sports Games, in Salinas, Spain on the 25th to 29th of July. Ronan is one of the top U16 surfers in Ireland and a member of the National Squad. He will be aiming to reach the final at the Games competing against surfers from Wales, Cornwall, Scotland, Brittany, Asturias, North of Portugal and Galicia
SAUSAGES HEAP PRESSURE ON ISA PHONE LINES AND E-MAIL! (July 1, 2005) It may sound like a joke but the recent hype of Irish surfing in advertisements (now even sausages!) on TV and in the media in general has created enormous pressure on the workings of the Irish Surfing Association. Failte Ireland (Irish Tourist Board) has also used surfing as a tool to try to get more visitors to certain areas of Ireland and this also has added to the pressure. The effect is that lots of people are getting interested in surfing and naturally want to contact the Irish Surfing Association to get more information on it.
In effect this means that everyday hundreds of e-mails are received and up to a hundred calls are coming through to the Irish Surfing Association head office in Sligo. With only one fulltime worker (doing the work of three!) It is impossible to deal with all the enquiries. In the last year it has snowballed to this level. So if anybody is trying to contact the Irish Surfing Association for tourism related reasons or surf reports etc. please realize we are not in a position to answer much of the time. We would love to be able to provide a tourist service but as you can see we are not in a position to do so.
There is a list of all clubs and groups in the Irish Surfing Association on the website and people are asked to go to these clubs as the first contact for any issues. Also surfingireland.net and other similar websites provide very interesting chat rooms, forums and surf/weather reports for a lot of aspects about Surfing in Ireland. If anybody wants anything on the website of the Irish Surfing Association newsletter please contact me on michael@isasurf.ie The success of the website and newsletter (which is going out to thousands) has admittedly added to the situation but we are trying to get extra funding to cope with it. ...And any marketing people who are thinking of using surfing to promote their product why not consider becoming a sponsor of the Irish Surfing Association and help the development of surfing in Ireland in a very constructive way and help out with all the work we do... Anyone for the last few 'Denny sausages' then? Submitted by Michael Sceach Kelly

NEW ZEALAND RIP CURL GROMSEARCH TWO SIGNED SEALED AND DELIVERED (July 15, 2005) An ensuing storm with predicted gale nor-westerlies sealed the fate of Event Two in the Rip Curl GromSearch Series at Muriwai today (Saturday) with the event being completed in dying light. The decision was made all the more easy by the presence of a perfect 1.5m swell and excellent surface conditions. The dark of the night did not hinder the Under 16 Boys as they went rampant on the Maori Bay waves. Most would have needed night vision glasses to surf but the ‘old men’ of the event let rip. Barely 10 seconds into the final Ryan Hawker (Piha) opened his account with a 7.0-point ride that proved to be the best of the final. Where the other finalists completed one or two big manoeuvres Hawker strung together several just the same to out score his opponents. With Billy Stairmand and Tim O’Connor hot on his tail Hawker sealed his first win of the year in the SNZ Under 16 Grom Series with a 5.95 on his last wave of the final. Interestingly the win gave Hawker back-to-back double victories after winning both the Under 16 and Under 14 Boys at the same event last year. O’Connor scored a total heat score of 11.55 to finish second little over a point ahead of Billy Stairmand both surfers falling on several waves which hindered their scoring. Local surfer Louie Wray-Murane surfed in his first final of the series placing fourth ensuring local surfers had a presence in the finals. Paige Hareb (Tara) showed her class in the tough Under 16 Girls Division final. Hareb lead from the outset posting a final-high 8.25 on her first wave. Jessica Welch (Gis) came back hard and fast with a 7.5 as her highest scoring wave but could not secure a good second scorer. Hareb built on her scores throughout the final until her last wave where she zapped through a small barrel and hit the end section for a 6.00 and the win. Both Laura Rishworth and Anna Hadfield of Mount Maunganui could not find the longer waves and had to settle for third and fourth respectively. Ryan Hawker (Piha) dominated the Under 14 Boys earlier, convincingly taking out first place after posting rides of 7.0 and then a near perfect score of 9.0 ‘combo-ing’ the other three. He then strengthened his led with a late 8.0 ride. Gisborne duo Jay Paddock and Adam Cranston fought long and hard exchanging second and third continually before Paddock finally got his nose in front to finish ahead of Cranston. Mathis Smith (Tara) left it late to open his account and could not make up the lost ground rounding out the top four. Piha surfer Maddy Phillips completed a hat trick of wins today victorious in the Under 14 Girls. Using her west coast wave knowledge, Phillips looked at home in the solid waves and took some big drops to post 10.25. Grace Spiers (WGM) secured second on her last wave ridden pushing Annie Stewart (Aucks) into third and Georgia Cooper finished in fourth.
The Under 12 Boys and Girls took to the challenge of the full tide conditions some making it out the back while others got washed into the reforms. Ben Poulter (Waihi Bch) was one surfer that managed to get out the back and it proved fruitful for him as he took out the final scoring 11.5. Left to battle out for the minor placings were Fraser Chatham (WGM) who on his last wave, moved into second pushing Peri Matenga (Mnt) into third with Chad Jones (Tara) finishing in fourth. Alexis Poulter (Waihi Bch) made it two wins for the Poulter family winning the Girls Division after scoring two good rides (11.0) out the back. Grace Spiers (WGM) finished in second close behind after scoring a 6.5 on her best wave. Check out the results from the event: U16 Boys Finals Ryan Hawker, Piha, 1, Tim O’Connor, Mnt, 2, Billy Stairmand, Rag, 3, Louie Wray-Murane, Muri, 4 U14 Boys Finals Ryan Hawker, Piha, Jay Paddock, Gis, Adam Cranston, Gis, Mathis Smith Tara U12 Boys Finals Ben Poulter, Waihi Bch, 1, Fraser Chatham, Whmata, 2, Peri Matenga, Mnt, 3, Chad Jones, Tara, 4 U16 Girls Finals Paige Hareb, Tara, 1, Jessica Welch, Gis, 2, Laura Rishworth, Mnt, 3, Anna Hadfield, Mnt, 4 U14 Girls Finals Maddy Phillips, Piha, 1, Grace Spiers, Whmata, 2, Annie Stuart, Auck, 3, Georgia Cooper, Piha, 4 Under 12 Girls Finals Alexis Poulter, Waihi Bch, 1, Grace Spiers WGM, 2

MAZ QUINN TO TAKE ON THREE TIME WORLD CHAMPION ANDY IRONS (July 6, 2005) New Zealand’s #1 surfer Maz Quinn (Gisborne) will face off against three time and defending World Champion Andy Irons (Haw) at the Mr Price Pro in South Africa later tonight (6.30pm Thursday, NZ time). The event is a six star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event that the world’s best surfers use in the build up to the Billabong Pro World Championship Tour (WCT) event that begins next week at Jefferies Bay, South Africa. Quinn beat WCT surfer and current world #33 Kalani Robb (Haw), Chris Davidson (Aus) and Luke Munro (Aus) in the Round of 96 surfers overnight to progress to the Round of 48 surfers. He now takes on Irons along with Bede Durbidge (Aus) and Guilherne Hedry (Brz). Quinn is aiming to qualify for the WCT in 2006 needing to place in the top 16 surfers on the WQS to assure himself a place on what many surfers call the ‘dream tour’. Quinn is currently ranked 51st and will jump up the ratings after this event. Just how much Quinn will jump depends on his performance throughout the remainder of this event. The event is set to finish on the 10th of July. Jay Quinn was also competing at the event bowing out in the first round. Lisa Hurunui the sole New Zealand female competing full time on the Women’s WQS is set to begin her campaign at the event overnight where she will surf against Jacqueline Silva (Brz), Falina Spires (USA) and Nikita Robb (ZAF) in the Round of 48 surfers. Live scores from the event can be accessed from www.mrpricepro.com. NEW ZEALAND JUNIOR SURFERS FIND SUCCESS IN AUSTRALIA In excess of 20 school age surfers travelled to Australia last week to compete in two events – Occy’s Grom Comp and the Rusty Gromfest. The storms that ravaged the New South Wales coastline played havoc with both events causing the final of Occy’s Grom Comp to be delayed until yesterday (Wednesday) and the Rusty Gromfest to run an extra day finishing on Tuesday this week. The New Zealand groms must have been used to the big conditions as they achieved several outstanding results. Topping the list was Ryan Hawker (Piha) who placed third in the Under 14 Boys Division of Occy’s Grom Comp, which was completed yesterday. Ryan Hawker was touted as the surfer to beat throughout the event; surfing strong enough to post a perfect 10-point ride in his semi-final. Coming up a little short of the win in the final, his third placing is still highly impressive and he has made a name for himself in the cut throat junior surfing community in Australia. The experience gained in Australia will also help his build up to the World Junior Championships to be staged in California during October this year. Sandy Bay’s Wini Paul placed third in the Under 16 Girls Division and Piha’s Tane Wallis finished fourth in the Under 12 Boys. Earlier in the day Tim O’Connor (Mnt) was pushed back to third in the semi-finals being beaten by the overall first and second placed surfers Chris Bennetts and Ellis Ericson both of Australia. O’Connor placed fifth overall. Late on Tuesday the Rusty Gromfest was completed at Lennox Heads with further good results form the groms. New Plymouth’s Mathis Smith surfed his way to fourth in the Under 14 Boys, which was a huge result. The Rusty Gromfest is considered the biggest and most prestigious event of its kind. On his way to the final Smith also ousted Ryan Hawker in the quarterfinals. Whangamata’s Stefan White placed 7th in the same division being eliminated in the semi-finals. Also from Whangamata, Grace Spiers placed 2nd in the Under 12 Girls ahead of young sister of Airini Mason, Sarah, in fourth. All of the groms travel back to New Zealand where they will compete in the Rip Curl Gromsearch at Muriwai on the 16th and 17th of July. SOUTH AFRICA ROXY SURF JAM USES MOBILE VENUE TO PRODUCE GREAT SURFING (July 25, 2005) The second of three events in the Roxy Surf Jam series for junior girls made full use of the Cape Peninsula's mobile venue format to produce outstanding surfing performances when the final day of the contest, Sunday July 26, was moved from Muizenberg to Long Beach in Kommetjie. National junior team member Tarryn Chudleigh (Kommetjie) took advantage of the switch from the gentle rolling waves of False Bay to the more powerful Atlantic Ocean surf of her home town by winning the prestige Pro Junior (u/20) title and finished runner-up in the u/16 category to earn a total of R2 150. Fellow national junior team member Chantelle Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand) was just as effective on the Atlantic side of the Peninsula, completely dominating the u/18 final, where she recorded the highest winning total of the event, and then finished less than a point behind Chudleigh in the u/20 final to pocket a total of R2 000 for her weekend's work. A third member of the National Junior team, Somerset West's Lisa Mace, duplicated Rautenbach's results by narrowly defeating Chudleigh in the u/16 final, where she recorded an outstanding 8.5 point ride, and then went on to place a solid second in the u/18 final to take home R1 150. The u/14 title went to Tanika Hoffman from Kirstenhof, another regular at Long Beach, who secured a well deserved victory over a highly rated trio of future stars, all of whom featured in finals in other age divisions. Bianca Buitendag from Victoria Bay in the Southern Cape placed second in the u/14's and third in the U18's, Holly Armstrong (Kommetjie) secured third in the u/14's and fourth in the u/18's while young Heidi Palmboom came all the way from Durban's Bluff to finish fourth in the u/14's and an excellent third in the Pro Junior category. Others to star in the finals included Gabrielle Kool (Gillitts, KZN), a last minute entry who took fourth place in the Pro Juniors, fellow KwaZulu Natal surfer and Roxy team rider Sarah Baum, who although only 12 years old placed third in the u/16 Division. Rookie Roxy finalist Sandra Olmesdahl from Marina da Gama, near Muizenberg, surfed her way into fourth place in the u/16's. Well run by Western Province Surfing and experienced contest director Chris Dunt, the event day one's proceedings took place in good 2-3 foot surf at Muizenberg Corner with the final day taking place in better 4 to 5 foot waves at Kommetjie. In a highly appreciated decision the organisers opted to raffle the four hampers of Roxy products that would have been won by the girls performing the most radical manoeuvres in each age division and to donate the proceeds to the Shark Watch program on Muizenberg Beach. "The Shark Watch program is doing a great job in making surfers, especially those still learning, feel more comfortable about surfing at Muizenberg," explained Roxy marketing manager Natasha Bellingan, adding "Our Roxy Surf Club operates there so we are very happy to assist in making the area safer." A flood of last minute entries boosted the total number of participants to more than 75 as both established performers and newcomers took advantage of the opportunity to compete in the girls only series. The Roxy Surf Jam series is supported by Saltwater Girl, Mentos and Roxy Sunnies and sanctioned by Surfing South Africa. The U20 division is also accredited by ASP Africa with the results of this division counting towards the Pro Surf Tour (PST) girls Pro Junior title for 2005. The first event in the 2005 series was held in Jeffrey's Bay in April and the grand final, where all the prize-money amounts are doubled, will take place at Bay of Plenty in Durban on the weekend 15 & 16 October. Thanks to Peugeot's support it will become an annual fixture. I am looking forward to the championship, particularly as it will involve many of our surfers who made their mark on surfing over the last 20 years or so. It is also great to form a partnership with a corporate sponsor such as Peugeot." Although emphasizing that ultimately they were in the business of selling beautiful cars Johnathan Mc Conkey, the National Sales Manager of Peugeot Motors South Africa and a surfer added that "the Peugeot brand has always been associated with adventurous and trend setting style, elegance, class and exclusivity. ANYTHING ANDY CAN DO BRUCE CAN DO TOO... (July 11, 2005) Bruce Irons moved out of the shadow of his elder brother and 2004 Mr. Price Pro Champion, Andy to take honours in the 2005 Mr. Price Pro at North Beach in Durban on Sunday (July 10) to keep the title in the family. The twenty-five-year old Hawaiian set himself a comfortable pace to progress through five rounds of competition before coming up against the powerful and determined Brazilian, Marcondes Rocha, in the final Displaying a progressive surfing style, which was probably better suited to the onshore 3-foot conditions than the top to bottom power moves of the Brazilian, Irons slowly took control of the heat. Hi answer to the Brazilian's power packed backhand attack, and initial 7.0 point score was to land an aerial reverse 360 to score an excellent 8.0. He then followed this ride up with a 7.10 in response to Rocha's 8.0 pointer to hold the edge with only minutes left in the heat. Despite Rocha's critical in the pocket moves, it was Irons's aerial affinity that caught the judge's eyes and in the end gave him a marginal victory over the plucky Brazilian. "I've never done well in this event although I've been competing here for eight years," said Irons. "My brother (Andy) was disappointed when he got knocked out earlier in the event but he'll be stoked that I took the title today and kept it in the family." Bruce won R105 000 ($ 15 000) and although he his sitting 14th on the ASP World Championship Tour, his win at the Mr. Price Pro six star WQS will significantly boost his World Qualifying Series ratings. Rocha earned significant WQS points and a R52 500 and said through an interpreter "I am very happy with the second place, it's the best result of my career and a lot of points which is really good for my WQS rating," The Brazilian surfer jumped 50 positions and is now ranked 13th on the ASP WQS. The Pro Junior final, which was a curtain raiser to the main final, highlighted the future of South African surfing with four of the country's best juniors up against each other to contest the title. Top seed and 2005 SA Junior Team captain Brandon Jackson (DBN) posted a decisive victory over Damien Farhenfort (DBN). Josch Schmeltzer (Westville) was third and Dave Richards (Kommetjie, CT) came fourth. "I was leading the PST going into the event so I'm stoked with my win because I wanted to put a little bit more distance between myself and second place. I did that today so I'm really happy with my win," said an elated Jackson. This year's Mr. Price Pro featured a world-class men's, women's and junior field of surfers. The Mr. Price Pro is a six star rated World Qualifying Series event with a total of R1 Million rand in prize money. Over 250 of the world's elite surfing professionals competed in the event.
